Dear colleagues, The Global Digital Humanities Symposium Planning Committee is pleased to open the Call for Proposals for the 6th annual Symposium, scheduled for April 12-15, 2021. This virtual event will take place synchronously over four days, with approximately three hours each day of programming. The Call for Proposals is now available in English, French, and Spanish (links below), and proposals and presentations are welcome in any of these three languages. During the Symposium, we will support live interpretation of presentations in these languages. Live captions will also be provided for presentations given in English. Further details about this foray in supporting multilingualism at the Symposium are available in the CFP. Rather than a set presentation length, this project showcase will enable one-on-one feedback and ask presenters to share about their work in a more conversational and extemporaneous way. Lab for Digital Art History & Visual Culture<https://dukewired.org/>, offers an 18-month Master of Arts in Digital Art History/Computational Media<https://gradschool.duke.edu/academics/programs-degrees/digital-art-historyc…>. The Computational Media track<https://aahvs.duke.edu/ma-computational-media> is designed for graduate students focused on the study, creation, and use of digital media and computation in the arts and humanities. Computational Media explores research and presentation strategies enabled by the information sciences, new approaches to computational processes, and new forms of interpreting quantitative and qualitative data. The goals of the program are for students to understand the critical affordances and potential of digital media, to develop competencies in data-driven and computational approaches to knowledge production, and to develop a hybrid theory-practice MA thesis that demonstrates their expertise in action around a particular subject. The program’s skills-centered instruction, combined with the requirement for lab affiliation and collaborative research and the emphasis on theoretical analysis, will produce graduates who not only have hands-on know-how and technical skills but who have developed a sophisticated understanding of informational globalization and our rapidly changing world. The Digital Art History track<https://aahvs.duke.edu/graduate/MA-historical-cultural-visualization> integrates historical disciplines and the study of cultural artifacts with digital visualization techniques for the analysis and presentation of research. The program builds on courses and well-developed strengths at Duke University, and requires 10 courses over three semesters in addition to summer research. Students affiliate with an existing faculty research initiative, from which they will develop their own independent research project for the M.A. thesis. Common themes that unite the various projects are the visualization of process, the representation of change over time, recontextualizing displaced objects and object biographies. The Digital Art History track prepares students for future work in such fields as public history, city planning and architectural design, cultural heritage, museum exhibition design and visualization-based journalism, and provides a springboard for more advanced study in art history, archaeology, architectural history and visual studies. Limited funding may become available in the form of grants and assistantships to students upon positive progress in the program. The pandemic outbreak has challenged and reconfigured human experience across physical, social and digital realities, and hence urges us to revisit our digital keywords vocabulary. This global webinar series will bring together leading digital humanities scholars to reflect upon their original contributions to the Digital Keywords. Each webinar will focus on two digital phenomena and their corresponding keywords to explore how their meanings are changing in the face of disruptions caused by lockdowns or social distancing, and what new cultural practices, social challenges and political implications emerge around the new digital vocabulary. What are the real and potential powers of online and biological viruses to disrupt, challenge, improve or destroy human life? The final webinar will facilitate a cross-disciplinary conversation between researchers at the University of Melbourne to share insights on the role of digital technologies in the current pandemic with its consequences for moral, social and physical being.
