Hi all, I'd like to thank those who have already volunteered to help draw up the call and terms for our research prizes and to serve on the adjudication panel. Currently I have the following people down (in no particular order) as volunteering; in one or two cases their ability to help will depend on some other commitments): * Heidi Estes * Gurpreet Singh * Domenico Fiormonte * Jieh Hsiang * Barbara Bordalejo * Hilary Culbertson (if you've volunteered and I missed you, please forgive me and drop me a quick reminder!) At ADHO there has been a lot of talk recently about the subtle ways in which Anglo-American academic practice is often unconsciously taken as the norm in our community, especially at conferences and the like. Since for this call I'm extremely eager to avoid falling into this trap, I'm looking for as wide an experience as possible. I don't think the work will be particularly heavy, so especially if you have some senior experience in Africa or Latin America/The Caribbean, I hope you'll consider helping us put together the terms of reference for this competition! DH projects from/about minority language groups

I'm in the process of trying to collect information (I don't even want to call it data, because I don't think there's even enough to call it that) about DH projects that involve minority languages or ethnic groups. I'm thinking about Gaelic or Welsh in the UK, Catalan or Basque on the continent, or indigenous languages here in the Americas, etc, etc, etc. I've been browsing the Around the DH World document and noticed that there aren't many of these kinds of projects listed. Of course, this doesn't mean that they don't exist, just that they aren't being promoted/recognized. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmgLcm5jfVhSdGlPNm1WQ0hRYjFTU1… I'm particularly interested in this because it does closely seem to mirror the experience of translation and world literature (the 3% rule, as they say). Are we just recreating the same materials that are already available, just in a digital form, or are we creating new resources and knowledge through recovery work? Reminder: call for volunteers for adjudication panel

Hi all, A quick reminder: I'm looking for volunteers to help write the terms of reference for and adjudicate submissions to a research prize that is being funded by the University of Lethbridge through its institutional Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grant. Because institutional expectations and norms vary so widely in this area, I am extremely interested in trying to ensure diversity of experience from as many regions, academic/intellectual cultures, and types of economies as possible: in particular I'd like to make sure that our terms are not inadvertently biased towards Anglophone North American expectations about what types of people should be encouraged to participate, how the competition should be structured, and what a winning proposal might look like. I have had a couple of volunteers already from North America and Western Europe; I'd especially like to encourage volunteers from other regions (though of course all are welcome)! If possible, I'd like to have this working group in place by the end of the week. Hello, Some on this list might be interested in KIWIX ( http://www.kiwix.org/wiki/Main_Page) an off-line wikimedia content reader, which can make Wikipedia (and presumably Wikileaks) content accessible in places where the site is censored or where internet access is expensive. Kiwix relies on a file format .zim optimized for this form of content. Zim archive sizes vary greatly between languages, the most recent English language archive (all articles, no pictures) is about 10 GB ( http://www.kiwix.org/wiki/Template:ZIMdumps). Kiwix became project of the month at SourceForge and their recent increase in downloads could mean that their archives might replace the native wikipedia xml dumps as main offline distributable. Call for adjudicators: Lethbridge Digital Humanities research prizes

Hi all, A couple of weeks ago, we had some discussion on the list about terms and process for establishing a prize for research on Digital Humanities in a global context. The prizes are being funded very generously by the office of the University of Lethbridge's Vice President Research, who has arranged for some of the University's internal SSHRC funding to support the work of GO::DH. At the time, we were discussing two tranches of four prizes of $500 for suitable work. I would like now to turn this discussion into a real competition. In keeping with the approach we've been taking at GO::DH, I'd like to do this by forming a small working group of 4-6 people to help write the terms of reference, establish deadlines, and, once the competition is launched, help adjudicate submissions. Since I'd like to offer a Spring and Fall competition, you should anticipate working on this for about a year. As several have pointed out, competitions like that proposed here are extremely sensitive to unintentional linguistic or cultural biases. For this reason I'd be extremely interested in ensuring that we have a real diversity of experience in the committee as we draw up the terms and run the competition. If you are interested in working on this project, could you let me know by Friday February 22nd?
