Open Access Journals Outside High Income Economies

Hi all, I'm on the executive committee at force11.org, a Community of Practice focussed on the future of Research Communication and e-Scholarship. It is an interesting group because of the range of domains and sectors it involves: Science and humanities, Commercial and Open access, and so on. We're in the early planning stages of a series of workshops on "the Commons and the Silo", in which we want to look specifically at what is common and what is unique across the entire domain of scholarly and Scientific dissemination. I have two questions that this group is probably the best place to ask. The first is whether anybody knows of similar groups focussed specifically on the issues of Research Communication and dissemination outside the High Income World or of initiatives we really should know about about scholarly communication in a global context (I should stress, BTW, that this ignorance is a reflection on me not Force11). The second is whether anybody on this list is working on anything similar and/ or would be interested in being kept in the loop on our progress. I can produce 10, but in the spirit of this list, I thought it might be nice to hear what others suggest. Call for papers and workshop proposals GO::DH/RedHD conference May 19 to 23

Dear colleagues, GO::DH and RedHD are organising a conference and series of workshops on 19-20 May (Workshops) and 21-23 May (conference). The deadline for proposals is January 20th. Paper proposals should be submitted via the easy chair system. Don't feel bad, Ernesto! It's perfectly fine to suggest our own texts - especially when they are written in a different language than English. So it's good to encourage our community to expand its (our) cultural vision. Now, allow me to switch to Spanish, as "detalle de agradecimiento" to Nuria Rodríguez who has kindly invited me as visiting scholar here in Malaga, where I'm enjoying a mild mediterrenean winter and the legendary Andalusian light! Creo que he aburrido todo el mundo durante demasiado tiempo con el tema de la dominación anglófona (que es dominación discursiva, antes que nada), e yo mismo quizás me he cansado de estar en las trincheras. Creo que al dejar la joventud (es decir, haciendome viejo...) me estoy volviendo pesimista sobre lo que se pueda hacer para cambiar realmente todo esto. El último golpetazo me lo procuró la antología "Defining digital humanities". No se equivoquen queridos amigos y amigas, no quiero criticar el producto: es un trabajo excelente y además muy útil. Sin embargo una ojeada al índice me causó un ataque de depresión. Es triste constatar que a pesar de que entre autores y coordinadores hayan personas sensibles al tema de las genealogías multilaterales de las HD (y de su carácter poligenético), entre las veinte y tantas contribuciones se encuentran dos o tres procedentes de personas que trabajaron en contextos lejos de las universidades de EE.UU y Reíno Unido. Surprendidos, verdad? Cuál es el resultado? Lo de siempre: una representación monocultural y universalista (que es mucho más arriesgado) de las humanidades digitales. Me pregunto: es esta la historia de las HD? Donde están los Jean-Claude Gardin, Tito Orlandi, Manfred Thaller, o el mismo Padre Busa, por ejemplo? Ya sé que se me responderá que el objetivo de ese trabajo no era hacer una historia de la HD. Pues, bien, pero entonces alguien me explique porque estos libros siempre empiezan hablando de "digital humanities" en el contexto "mundial" (ver el sitio web de la editorial: "There are now hundreds of Digital Humanities centres worldwide..."), y luego resulta que su mundo es muy pequeño. No quereís hablar de la historia? Vale, pero en donde se habla de lo que se está haciendo *ahora* en la India, en Mexico, Argentina, China, Japón? Habría sido tan dificil incluir beves resumenes de proyectos, recursos, ideas y visiones procedentes de "otros" mundos? Acaso nosotros - el mundo al fin del mundo - cuando compilamos antologías de - yo que sé - literatura digital hacemos lo mismo? No me parece (ver por ejemplo unas de las primeras que se publicaron en España: M.J. Vega, (ed.), 2004: Literatura hipertextual y Teoría Literaria, Madrid: Mare Nostrum). Todos los autores de la antología son muy conocidos, pero de verdad sus ideas, proyectos, idiomas, etc. representan las humanidades digitales de hoy? Me permito dudarlo. "Defining digital humanities", como muchos libros que se han sacado ultimamente, pretenden representar las humanidades digitales como si fueran un monolito engendrado por las diez instituciones del mundo que más poder y fondos tienen (y tuvieron) en los últimos diez o veinte años. Me parece muy bien que lo hagan, pero que nos cuenten las cosas como son. Yo sugeriría cambiar el título en: "Defining Digital Humanities in the First Class World". Eso sería mucho más honesto. Estas mismas instituciones no paran de decirnos como se deberiá escribir un artículo, una propuesta para una conferencia, un "grant", un proyecto de investigación, etc. Y el 80% de las veces descartan lo que no es conforme al modelo. Acabamos de concluir las entrevistas de los candidatos a las becas Marie Curie del proyecto DiXiT, y vari@s de los que llegaron primeros o primeras en las "short list", es decir, que tenían mejor curriculum, fueron descartados porque no hablaban suficientemente bien inglés... Así va el mundo. En fin, opino que mucho de lo que está ocurriendo en el "mundo" de las HD, es una grave distorción y manipulación histórica, retórica, y cultural. Estoy muy preocupado porque el descuido para la diversidad nunca ha sido una peculiaridad de las humanidades, y ahora es exactamente lo que está ocurriendo. Este descuido no creo sea calculado o voluntario, y sin embargo se suma a otros moviementos globales, muchos más graves de los que estoy discutiendo aquí (ver cita abajo). No cabe duda que la contribución del mundo anglófono es fundamental. Pero no se puede aceptar que cuando todo el mundo habla de HD incluya siempre en la historia a ellos, y cuando ellos escriben la historia solo incluyan a ellos mismos. Tampoco se puede aceptar que la investigación hable solo inglés. Comunicar en inglés entre nosotros es necesario, y divulgar los resultados científicos en este idioma es quizás ya algo imprescindible. Pero comunicar, difundir y transmitir es un asunto, investigar es otro. Los objetos culturales no pueden ser investigados e interpretados solo en un idioma y a través de un sola estructura retórico-expresiva. Esto sería un gran peligro para la diversidad biocultural. Acabamos de concluir unos de los capitulos finales de nuestro libro "The Digital Humanist. A Critical Inquiry" (llevamos más tres años intentando sacarlo a la luz... quien sabe porqué), y estoy trabajando sobre el tema del "biocultural diversity". Esta cita viene muy bien para concluir: "Instead, a lowering of both cultural and biological diversity has been found to correlate with the development of complex, stratified and densely populated societies and of far-reaching economic powers. (...) From ancient empires to today's globalized economy, these complex social systems have spread and expanded well beyond the confines of local ecosystems, exploiting and draining natural resources on a large scale and imposing cultural assimilation and the homogenization of cultural diversity." DHd (Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum) associate organisation of EADH

Die Vorstände von DHd und EADH freuen sich, mitteilen zu dürfen, dass der Verband *Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum* nunmehr offiziell als Regionalverband assoziiert ist mit der *European Association of Digital Humanities* (EADH) und damit zugleich im internationalen Dachverband Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) repräsentiert ist. Mitglieder von DHd haben aufgrund der Assoziierung zusätzlich automatisch den Status eines Vollmitglieds von EADH und erwerben so - ohne zusätzliche Gebühren - Anspruch auf alle entsprechenden Leistungen von EADH und ADHO (Konferenzrabatte, Antragsberechtigung für Stipendien und Fördermaßnahmen, etc.). Der Bezug der EADH-Verbandszeitschrift "LLC. The Journal of Digital Scholarship in the Humanities" ist dabei optional. The video features Ernesto Oroza, who mentions a book, published in Cuba, called El libro de la familia. Does anyone know whether it is possible to get a copy of this book? Has it been digitised? Websites for following technology and the humanities outside of Europe, Canada, U.S.?

Hi all, I've recently started trying to expand my daily reading (and tweeting) about education, the humanities, and technology in a more regular fashion. Currently, most things I check on a daily or weekly basis are focussed on Canada, the U.S., or Europe--in fact primarily the UK (NYTimes, Guardian, Washington Post, Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, Slate, Salon, the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, National Post, Economist). I've recently added Scidev.net and the Times of India to my daily scan. Does anybody have any other suggestions for useful news-sites to include in my daily or weekly read? I'm particularly interested in places that are good on news about higher education, technology, and the intersection of higher education, university research, and technology outside of Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. I can read and/or pick my way through a number of different European languages (Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Italian--with things getting worse as you move from left to right). At the same time, however, since part of my goal is to tweet these to an international audience, things with an English version will be particularly useful. (I'm trying to think of ways of sharing non-English language news internationally--perhaps through a Google Translate URL?) Any ideas or suggestions?
