We would like to expand the Translation Board to provide the website content and other messages in many different languages. Dear colleagues, Please note that the Call for Proposals for the Global Digital Humanities Symposium (March 23-25, 2022) closes TOMORROW, Wednesday, December 1. In order to facilitate the anonymous review process and finalize a program by the end of January, we will not be able to extend this deadline, so please do send in proposals on December 1. This virtual event will take place synchronously over three days, with approximately four hours each day of programming. The Call for Proposals is still open and is available in English, French, and Spanish (links below), and proposals and presentations are welcome in any of these three languages. During the Symposium, we will support live interpretation of presentations in these languages. Live captions will also be provided for presentations given in English. Dear colleagues, Several members of the GO::DH Executive Committee, who have graciously provided years of excellent service, are now moving on to other services elsewhere, even as they remain committed and supportive members of the organization. With their term now ended or coming to an end, we are now seeking at least four nominees for election and/or acclamation to the Committee. This will be for a two-year term of service beginning immediately after the election, from January 1st, 2022 to December 31, 2023. All voting positions on the Committee are for two-year terms that can be renewed three consecutive times. We begin with a nomination period, which will close Tuesday, December 14 at midnight in all time zones, followed by a two-week elections period. The election will be held by electronic ballot open to all subscribers to the GO::DH mailing list. While the work of the GO::DH Executive Committee is not heavy, it is important to our community and the support of an approach to DH that recognizes, facilitates and encourages linguistic, regional, and other forms of diversity. This year, GO::DH has launched a series of Webinars and we continued our publication program. We welcome your ideas and enthusiasm for other initiatives GO::DH can undertake! Please consider nominating yourself (self-nominations are common and welcome) or somebody else in our community by emailing Barbara Bordalejo at barbara.bordalejo(a)ulethc.ca. Dear all, We are pleased to invite proposals for contributions to the Critical Infrastructure Studies & Digital Humanities book we are editing for the Debates in the Digital Humanities Series <https://dhdebates.gc.cuny.edu> (University of Minnesota Press). Critical Infrastructure Studies & Digital Humanities aims to direct the attention of digital humanists to the wider area of infrastructure studies, and deploy perspectives gained from that wider infrastructuralism to better understand the infrastructures of DH. It will bring infrastructural approaches front and center as an area where DH is uniquely equipped to lead the humanities in thought and practice, using its own infrastructural legacy as inspiration and mirror. The aim is to understand how infrastructure underpins and influences DH, and how DH in turn can influence infrastructure design, development, and maintenance. The volume will promote understanding of critical infrastructure studies as a field of writing and practice, and open dialogues between DH and cognate infrastructural fields. Please consider contributing a work for Critical Infrastructure Studies & Digital Humanities that might fit into one of the following three categories: 1. Critical Infrastructure Studies from the Perspective of DH: Argumentative essays (preferably in the range of 6,000 words) that explore issues and debates around historical or contemporary infrastructures, or infrastructuralism at large, but with attention to (or through the lens of) their digital platforms, technologies, data, media, and other features of interest to DH. 2. Digital Humanities from the Perspective of Critical Infrastructure Studies: Argumentative essays (preferably in the range of 6,000 words) that explore debates, histories, and theories of the infrastructures of DH itself, and of its institutions and practices, in ways that exceed a narrow disciplinary focus or a “this is my project” mode. Essays would ideally draw DH into wider vistas that will interest humanists in general or scholars in other fields. 3. (Re)Envisioning DH Infrastructure: Briefer textual or multimedia (e.g., digital arts, graphic novel, filmic, musical), interactive, data-modeled, documentary, creative, or other works that help envision or reenvision infrastructures and are represented by a critical statement. (Contributions for this category can include materials in digital form to be embedded or linked from the open-access, online version of the volume that will appear on the Manifold platform three months after the publication of the print book. But there must be a standalone critical statement for the print book.) To ensure that the volume includes diverse viewpoints, the editors encourage contributions from scholars, scholar-activists, practitioners, artists, designers, engineers, and others from different racial, ethnic, and indigenous backgrounds, from the LGBTQ community, from around the world, from different disciplines and kinds of institutions, and from those at all levels and stages in their profession. (Contributions must be in English, though translations in other languages provided by authors may be included in the post-print, open-access version of the volume.) A distinctive feature of Critical Infrastructure Studies & Digital Humanities is that each essay or other contribution will include a brief “infrastructure manifest” that declares the principal infrastructures underlying its creation—e.g., natural resources, unceded indigenous land, and major platforms, networks, tools, and institutional or other structures providing sources, storage, processing and workflow (including writing, visualizing, communicating, and collaborating), and labor and expertise—along with any key ethical considerations. Yet, centering disabled people’s voices and leveraging critical disability studies as methodology within the construction of information systems can sharpen analyses of the design of information systems, algorithmic decision-making technologies, and their impacts on marginalized communities. Alternatively, information systems and technologies often mediate disabled people’s daily lives—from the assistive tech we use, the ways we connect through online communities and hybrid spaces, and the ways we research and understand our histories—thus granular attention to the ways in which such systems operate is likewise crucial. For a special issue of First Monday, a monthly peer-reviewed open access academic journal, we seek to address disability and information systems through their materiality, methods, representation, technological specificities, lived embodiments, pedagogies — the historical to contemporary. We aim to bring together dual perspectives from Disability Studies and Information Studies in order to foster nuanced conversations at this nexus. We aim to bring together thinkers from both fields — particularly those who are disabled themselves — to map critical histories and speculative futures for information science that are informed by critical discussions in disability justice and design justice. We explicitly ask for a range of contributions — first-person narratives, theoretical and practical scholarship, and case studies — that address the vast topics within the fields of Information Studies and Disability Studies, including interdisciplinary research, co-authored papers, and non-traditional scholarly articles. We are interested in work that attends to disability spanning all subdisciplines of information studies: the historical to the technological, analog to digital systems, individual craft practice to institutional analyses. How might centering disabled voices and disability studies frameworks as ways of knowing change the field of information studies? Similarly, how might nuanced attention to information systems change the ways we understand their interactions with disabled people and people from other marginalized and oppressed communities? This special issue will foreground critical disability studies work and knowledge production that takes place both within and outside of the academy, and aims to center disabled people whose work may not be traditionally considered academic or scholarly.
