Open Access Journals Outside High Income Economies

Hi all, I'm on the executive committee at force11.org, a Community of Practice focussed on the future of Research Communication and e-Scholarship. It is an interesting group because of the range of domains and sectors it involves: Science and humanities, Commercial and Open access, and so on. We're in the early planning stages of a series of workshops on "the Commons and the Silo", in which we want to look specifically at what is common and what is unique across the entire domain of scholarly and Scientific dissemination. I have two questions that this group is probably the best place to ask. The first is whether anybody knows of similar groups focussed specifically on the issues of Research Communication and dissemination outside the High Income World or of initiatives we really should know about about scholarly communication in a global context (I should stress, BTW, that this ignorance is a reflection on me not Force11). The second is whether anybody on this list is working on anything similar and/ or would be interested in being kept in the loop on our progress. Applications in native language and talk in English ?

Dear friends, As I am thinking about submitting a paper to DH2014, I would like to suggest a way to enhance the visibility of non english native speakers and to encourage them to submit in their own language. I would like to propose that the *application* is *reviewed* in the native and the *talk* *given* in English. That would help a lot : - the "cost" to write the project would be reduced, and so we would receive more non English applications because people would not have to translate their application in English ; - if the application is refused, then the translation would be useless ; - if the application is agreed, then a translation process of the whole paper would be required, but it would be worth it, since the paper is accepted. The only drawback of this system is that reviewers and authors are more likely to know each other. The advantage is that we are more likely to get new reviewers and more applications. To be completely honnest, today, I am not confortable with my position of reviewer, since I do not support people willing to give a talk in French AND that my reviewing skills are best for French contents. If I had to review in French a paper that would produce a talk in English, this would be more confortable for me. What do you think about this two-step proposal? This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged. Experienced Researchers must be in possession of a doctoral degree or have at least 4 years of full-time equivalent research experience. At the time of recruitment by the host organisation an experienced researcher must also have less than 5 years of full-time equivalent research experience. It should be noted that an individual researcher may not be recruited first as an ESR and subsequently as an ER in the same project. Marie Curie ITN mobility requirement: Researchers can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment. One general rule applies to the appointment of researchers: At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account. Application process: Please note that applications from any qualified applicants, regardless of gender, ethnicity or country of origin are welcome if they meet the eligibility requirements. Applicants should send their applications directly to the institution hosting the desired fellowship. *Please distribute as widely as possible* Ages of the Book International Conference 2014 Dates: October 13 -17, 2014 Hosted by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Mexico City, Mexico Deadline for submissions: February 14th 2014 Call for papers The aim of the conference is to bring together specialists from diverse fields of study, such as written and printed culture, visual design and communication, editing and the publishing industry, history, literature and new technologies, for discussion of academic, scientific, technical and economic issues that will advance our knowledge on the written word throughout history. The conference will explore the wide range of traditions and innovations surrounding the composition of texts manifest in distinct periods and in different regions of the world, from the early production of codices through to present day electronic books. The organizing committee invites abstract submissions on subjects such as epigraphy, calligraphy and paleography, editorial design, typography, printing processes, ecdotics, textual and graphic editing, electronic publishing and technology applied to editing. Additional topics for consideration are transmission of texts, textual and visual disposition, page design, typography and illustrations in books, text-image relationships, ornamentation, initialing, reading styles and methods, use and management of color in the transmission of texts, usability, design and navigation for screen, e-book interface design and visual ergonomics. The main thematic areas are the manuscript, printed and electronic book. The conference will be held at the Instituto de Investigaciones Bibliográficas (Institute for Bibliographic Studies) of the UNAM in Mexico City from 13th to the 17th of October 2014. Essay Prize Update

Hi all, A quick update on (and apology for) the progress of the Global Outlook::DH essay prize. We are running behind on our adjudication. This is largely because of unexpected (and temporary) cutbacks at the University of Lethbridge which left us short administrative support this fall. We have done the first round of scorings and are now collating the results in order to the final list of winners and runners up. I apologise for the delays, which have been largely the result of circumstances beyond our control. Because we are still without support (meaning that I'm doing the administration alongside my regular duties), I'm reluctant to make promises about timing which I might end up breaking. But I can say that I'm working on the collation of the scores right now. I hope to be able to have the results ready and approved within two weeks.
