FYI. If you know of Canadian projects or projects with Canadians participating in the lead and want to nominate them, the contact information is below. I was on the committee that put this award together and a goal is to really find a way of recognising the things in DH that are crucial to the field but not always easy to reward or otherwise recognise. Global Outlook Digital Humanities Call for Nominations

Hi all, Since it would be really nice to encourage diversity among our candidates (and upcoming executive), let me encourage you to circulate this call for nominations and also to paraphrase it or translate it into other languages if you think that might encourage participation from underrepresented groups. In the period December 2013-January 2014, proposed bylaws were circulated for comment to the community (the bylaws can be found here: http://www.globaloutlookdh.org/proposed-bylaws/). These bylaws had been approved by the ad hoc executive we established a year ago to oversee the first year of the organisation. The bylaws establish the procedure by which GO::DH shall be governed in the future. They call for the election of an 8 member executive, from which a chair shall be chosen. The executive will also be responsible for appointing all officers. Normally, the executive will be elected to staggered two year terms, with half the executive up for election each year. For the first year, all positions on the executive are open: half the vacancies will be for a one year (renewable) term, the other half for a two year (renewable) term. Normally, the nominations and elections will occur in January. For a variety of reasons, not least of which was the need to circulate the bylaws for comment, we are one month late this year. I have recently been given funding to hire an administrative assistant, Mia Angelica Alcantara-Santiago, who has agreed to serve as returning officer and chair of the nominations committee for this first election (in future years, these positions will be held by a member of the executive who is not up for reelection). We would like, therefore, to open nominations for candidates for the executive of GO::DH. Any member of our mailing list may stand for election and self-nominations are very welcome. If you would like to nominate somebody for election (including yourself), please email Mia Angelica at caedmon(a)uleth.ca<mailto:caedmon@uleth.ca>. She will need the name and email address of the nominee. Please ensure that your nominee is willing to stand for election. Please also ask the nominee if they would prefer to stand for a one or a two year term (both terms are renewable; in the future, all terms will be two years). In keeping with the goals and mandate of GO::DH, we strongly encourage diversity in our nominees: there are no linguistic, geographic, or other requirements for office and we encourage nominees from all countries and speakers of all languages to apply. Nominations will close February 15. A ballot will then be prepared with the candidates names and members of the mailing list will be asked to select up to eight names for election. The ballot will close, one week after it opens and the first elected GO::DH executive will be announced. DH Awards Suggestion

Hi GO::DH, Me again! Sorry. After summarising the suggestions received here I received a suggestion through other means that I'd like to run by you since it does feed into the desire to encourage non-anglo DH resources to nominate themselves for DH Awards. As you'll remember some didn't like the annual nature of the awards without a catch-all category of 'other' and some didn't like the non-English category because of a perceived ghettoisation of non-English resources. I resisted the 'other' category for two reasons (1: a *large* category for admin and voters; 2: difficulty of comparison for voters). The suggestion was made to me that there be an 'Other' category for anything that didn't fit into the other categories, but that nominations in this category be restricted to non-English resources (that didn't fit into any of the other categories and the nominations committee try to move things nominated here to other categories if suitable). The idea behind this suggestion, I believe, is that English resources don't get the benefit of the 'other' category and miss out as previously described, but non-English resources do not. This would be a form of so-called 'positive discrimination' based on the assumption that anglo resources have more than enough innate privileges. For my part, I found the idea clever but I worry about any form of discrimination (positive or not), and also couldn't think of a way to name it which didn't seem to repeat the perceived ghettoisation that people have seen in this year's category. A book published on paper often has supplemental translation notes online which serve to enrich the reading experience. Shared online spaces between translators create long-lasting interactions. Networks of cultural journals such as the Eurozine (eurozine.com) have set up on-going translation systems that follow European debates. DH Awards

Dear All, This email goes out as a result of reading Domenico's remarks about the writing of DH history but I thought it would be best to start a new thread as I would like to hear other people's opinion about something specific regarding the DH Awards. I would like to say first that I really like the DH Awards and I think it is a great idea. I promoted the nominations through the RedHD. I was very surprised however to find when the nominations came out that all DH projects that are not in English are grouped under one category (Best DH contribution not in the English language) whilst English DH projects are divided under five different, separate categories. Reading the About section of the DH awards I see absolutely no practical or specific reason why this is done. The section reads: "Digital Humanities Awards are a new set of annual awards given in recognition of talent and expertise in the digital humanities community and are nominated and voted for entirely by the public. These awards are intended to help put interesting DH resources in the spotlight and engage DH users (and general public) in the work of the community. Awards are not specific to geography, language, conference, organization or field of humanities that they benefit." So why then this distinction? A "Best DH visualization or infographic" or "Best DH project for public audiences" should be the best one regardless of what language is it. Especially if the voting is done by us. I might understand if there was a committee in charge of making the selection and they could argue that they need to understand the resource in order to vote but this is not the case. And if it were, then should it not read "DH Awards in the English language". However, the voting is done by the "community" and I feel that the Spanish speaking DH community, or the Russian or the Italian should be able to vote for the projects that they feel are interesting within the main categories and not in a separate, different one. Information regarding term-limits, previous service, etc.

Hi all, I was just asked a good question by a member of this year's executive: are current executives eligible to stand for election? This is also related to term limits (our new bylaws have term-limits on all elected positions to ensure that there is some churn on the executive and new perspectives are able to get in. The bylaws treat 2014 as year 0 for GO::DH. Last year we took the risk of setting things up and then developing bylaws as we went along, and we were very lucky that everything went very smoothly. But since most members of the executive were self-appointed (we asked for volunteers and the board consisted of everybody who volunteered), we felt in putting the bylaws together that the election of our first executive was really going to be a new stage in the history of the project. So this means that service in 2013 is basically ignored by the bylaws. If you are on the executive or doing anything for GO::DH, you are absolutely welcome (and indeed encouraged) to put your name forward for election. If you are elected, your service in 2013 won't count against any term limits.
