Dear GO::DH members, The run-off election period ended last night. With such a great slate of candidates, the election results were again very close, but we are now pleased to announce the four elected candidates for the 2015-2017 term. In alphabetical order: Gimena del Rio Alex Gil Dan O'Donnell Padmini Ray Murray The new executive will take office in the next few days, appoint a chair, vice-chairs and officers and will make the news available to the group. We would like to thank all of the candidates for their enthusiasm and willingness to serve as part of GO::DH! We also thank everyone who voted at these elections and especially the outgoing GO::DH executive committee members who have worked tirelessly and made a great impact in the group. Our voter turnout was a bit lower than we had expected, and we would like to encourage everyone on the list to get involved in any way you may wish. *Digital Humanities in Portugal: building bridges and breaking barriers in the digital age* * * Presentation Discussion about the role of the Humanities in academia and society has a long history. The confluence of this debate with the changes brought about by digital technology is not new either: one cannot speak of "new technologies" for the Humanities when many researchers turned to digital methods at least four decades ago, in disciplines as diverse as Linguistics, History or Literary Studies. However, the impact of the recent discourse linked to Digital Humanities has led to interesting developments in research in the Humanities. Indeed, networks amongst researchers have been boosted in a way never seen before, bridges between the Humanities and other Sciences have been built, and disciplinary barriers within the Humanities have been broken. The Conference “Digital Humanities in Portugal” aims precisely to stimulate these intersections, opening up a forum for discussion and sharing of research results or ongoing projects in this field of knowledge. Although one of the aims of the conference is to bring together researchers working in Portugal or on Portuguese subjects, we welcome contributions from other geographical areas and on other subjects. It is also our aim to showcase Digital Humanities projects from Europe and elsewhere, and thus foster mutual knowledge and network development. On observe pourtant un élargissement tous azimuts de ces communautés de pairs, consécutivement à de nouvelles pratiques de publications plus ouvertes de la part des chercheurs, et dont l’éditorialisation incorpore des modes de partage et de discussion issus de milieux non-savants. Ces dispositifs d’éditorialisation redéfinissent les conditions de la parité en ouvrant la controverse scientifique à des communautés plus larges, encourageant ainsi leur accès au public et favorisant une plus grande transparence sur les enjeux de recherche. La collaboration du public à ces controverses ou lors des initiatives d’Open Science à des micro-tâches de recherche participe pleinement à l’activité scientifique. Uszkalo have started organizing this year's Kule Institute for Advanced Study’s (KIAS <http://uofa.ualberta.ca/kule-institute>) Around the World Conference. This conference goes on for a day, passing on the mic (more like Skype) around from continent to continent. The subject this year will be Big Data. Geoffrey and Kirsten have asked me to help them organize one of the panels, at 1pm EST. If you would be interested in presenting as part of the GO::DH slot, send me an email.
