Dear colleagues,
Planning is fully underway for the 10th Global Digital Humanities Symposium<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://msuglobaldh.org/__;!!HXCxUKc!zQWARKScRv…>, with the Call for Proposals closing on October 16.
The symposia of past years have been successful thanks to the generous contributions of our reviewers who have helped to shape engaging and wide-ranging scholarly programs. We’re hoping to expand our numbers this year, particularly with those who are readers of Spanish, and would love to have your participation, especially if you have participated in the Symposium in the past. If you’re interested in reviewing, please fill out this brief form<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://forms.gle/vu3uFnwAEQGJ6KJr8__;!!HXCxUKc…> by Friday, October 11th, 2024.
As a reviewer, you can expect to receive 4 to 6 proposals, each of which you’ll be asked to evaluate in the Oxford Abstracts platform. After the October 11 sign up deadline, we will set up an Oxford Abstracts account for you. Please sign up with the email you want to use for Oxford Abstracts. We expect to send reviewers their assignments on Friday October 18, 2024, and will ask for completed reviews by Thursday, November 14, 2024.
We thank the GO:DH community for its longstanding support of the Global DH Symposium, and look forward to sharing an exciting program with you in December as we look toward the April 2025 event!

Dear colleagues,
The Call for Proposals for the 10th annual Global Digital Humanities Symposium closes in just under one month, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, midnight in your timezone. The Symposium will take place as a virtual event from April 2-4, 2025, and an in-person event at Michigan State University from April 6-8, 2025. Presenters accepted for the in-person Symposium are eligible to apply for funding to offset travel expenses<https://msuglobaldh.org/call-for-proposals-english/#funding> related to presenting at the Global Digital Humanities Symposium.
For the past ten years, the Global Digital Humanities Symposium has brought together a diverse range of presenters to spark cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural, and ethically engaged conversations. We will celebrate our decade in this space by reflecting on global digital humanities as a field as well as our impact on this rich area of scholarship. We therefore invite presenters from previous Symposia to return to the conference and share how their work has developed since their presentation.
The CFP is available in English and Spanish (links below). Proposals and presentations are welcome in either English or Spanish for the virtual event, and in English for the in-person event. During the virtual Symposium, we will support live interpretation of presentations, as well as live English captions. Further details about multilingualism at the Symposium are available in the CFP.
Full CFP - English - https://msuglobaldh.org/call-for-proposals-english/
Full CFP - Español - https://msuglobaldh.org/call-for-proposals-espanol/
This year, we especially anticipate and welcome presentations on the following topics:
*
Reflections on the Symposium itself–what has been our effect on the field?
*
Considerations of the “global” in DH
*
Trial, error, process, preservation, and project conclusion as part of DH praxis
*
DH approaches to misinformation, media, and rhetoric in a global election year
*
Labs, support networks, streams/variations, and infrastructure for Global Digital Humanities
Presentation formats vary for the virtual and in-person Symposium. See the full CFP for details and further presentation topics.
Free registration for the Symposium will open in December 2024. Find out more, including information about past Symposia, at https://msuglobaldh.org/.

In-depth Webinar on Bidirectional Text (Bidi Part 2), Tuesday, August 13, 2024, 10:00 (San Francisco), 13:00 (New York), 17:00 (UTC) and 19:00 (Berlin).
A number of scripts, such as Hebrew, Arabic and Urdu, write their letters horizontally on a page or screen, running right to left. However, other characters, such as digits, flow left-to-right. Text that handles both right-to-left and left-to-right text is called “bidirectional” text (“bidi” in short). Bidi text can occur on the same line, or even alongside other left-to-right text, such as Latin.
In the second of a three-part series, Part 2 will delve deeper into more advanced topics and practical applications of bidirectional text processing. Three expert speakers will be on hand to provide detailed insights and answer your questions. Questions may be submitted in advance. The session will be recorded.
Part 1, which took place in June, provided an introduction to bidi and is available for viewing at: https://youtu.be/TWfvRdS_7x0?feature=shared

Dear all,
I am assisting in organizing a Unicode-hosted event on bidirectional text, which I know has been an issue for a number of projects. Below is information on a free webinar on bidi. Please forward to others who may be interested.
Deborah (Debbie) Anderson
Project lead, Script Encoding Initiative<https://scriptencodinginitiative.github.io/index.html>, Dept. of Linguistics, UC Berkeley
“The basics of Bidi” on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 08:00 AM Pacific Time.
Background
A number of scripts, such as Arabic and Hebrew, write their letters horizontally on a page or screen, running right to left. A complication for these scripts is that other characters, such as digits, flow left-to-right, and can occur on the same line, or even alongside other left-to-right text, such as Latin. Text that handles both right-to-left and left-to-right text is called “bidirectional” text (“bidi” in short). How to handle bidi text on browsers and in other software is challenging for both general users and implementers. This webinar will describe the basics with examples. It will be followed by a live question-and-answer period.
This is part 1 of a 2-part series, with the second more in-depth session to take place August 13, 2024. Note: This webinar will be recorded and it will be available for viewing later on the Unicode Consortium YouTube channel.<https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQNrSepJnz8BjWT7lrKH9Tw>
Registration
To register, please use this registration link<https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/1917159643449/WN_wtqmIMS-ScasVMSqM…>. Feel free to share this announcement and link with any others who may be interested. As part of the registration, attendees can submit questions in advance.
About The Speakers
The main presenter is Richard Ishida, who has served as the Internationalization Lead for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for 20 years. He also serves on the Unicode Editorial Committee and the Unicode Script Encoding Working Group. A live question-and-answer period will follow the talk, with Richard Ishida and Roozbeh Pournader fielding the questions. Roozbeh Pournader is an internationalization engineer who has been contributing to the Unicode Standard since 1999,
