To my knowledge Hispanic is not derogatory. As Ernesto Priego pointed out here in Mexico the undergraduate course is "Lengua y literaturas hispánicas".

I don't see "Hispanic" as derogatory at all either. At UNAM in México the discipline is still "Lengua y literaturas hispánicas".
I have also used "hispanic" to describe my ethnic background in the UK. Not that it exists as a category in equal opportunity forms yet...

We're not sure the term derogatory (or if it is, that it is derogatory anywhere other than the U.S.). But we certainly don't want to stand on any bombs.
