The GO::DH Minimal Computing Working Group will kickstart itself at DH2014 with a workshop. A key component of this workshop is a series of lightning talks (2-5 minute presentations) on current work going on in the area from around the globe. The deadline for submissions is May 1.
As CFPs go the requirements are pretty light: just a single page on what you have been up to regarding minimal computing, whether it be working with hardware, software, theory, or any combination thereof. We even have provisions being put in place to include those who would like to participate but who will not be in Switzerland for DH2014.
We can take up to 30 submissions for the workshop and expect that all submissions will be included in a bundled PDF file that will be circulated to the DH community and made available on the working group web page.
Sound great but just finding out about this now? Need a little more time? Send workshop organizer John Simpson a note at john.simpson@ualberta.ca and we'll happily work out a short extension with you.

Hi John,
Is this available in Spanish? I met some amazing folks in Peru at HASTAC 2014 and would like to pass this on, but if you have a version in Spanish it would probably get some more traction.

Hi Fiona,
I could translate it into Spanish this weekend if you think it would help.
Please, please invite the folks that you met who gravitate towards DH to join our mailing list http://www.globaloutlookdh.org/join/ and even more importantly, the list for RedHD http://www.humanidadesdigitales.net/! I feel really bad that I couldn't make it, but couldn't get funding. Peru is a connection that we did not get a chance to make yet in building coalitions in Latin America, and yet, judging from the program, which I studied carefully, they seem to be very active! The RedHD and GO::DH to a lesser extent provides many great community conversations in Spanish. We would love to meet our colleagues in Peru! This would also be a way to tap them into our translation networks and get them involve in our regional conferences.
Let me know how I can help you start making all these connections and introductions. Lo haría con mucho gusto!
Btw, thoroughly enjoyed the pictures and tweets rolling out of Lima! A.

Hi Alex, I think it would help, if the deadline can be extended for them too (Won’t happen by May 1).
It was such a crying shame not to have more Spanish-speaking GO::DH folks there - we had simultaneous panels in Spanish and English, the keynotes were translated and in many of the other panels fellow conference participants offered informal translation and Q&A help for each other. It was a really really amazing event. We need to figure out how to connect with them and extend the go:DH community. They are eager and hungry for connections. Really too bad that we didn’t really have the active spanish-speaking GO::DH folks there.
Here’s a quick idea: can someone post to HASTAC with an invitation to the South American / Latin American conference attendees to join GO::DH? Explain what it is, who might want to join, and whatever else.
We are doing a post-conference newsletter which will go out to all attendees and if this could be included, that is a good chance to get it to them asap.
The key is that we are sending this out THIS WEEK as a way of connecting after the conference, so if you want it to be included, it has to go up soon.
My guess is you have things that can be repurposed, but make it very invitational and personal and not just “this is what we do - join us” — if that makes sense. Make it specific about connecting to larger digital humanities conversation after the conference and maybe share links to a few key other GO:DH projects that make sense in this context.
Sorry for the disconnected writing. I’m running to class and dead exhausted from the overwhelmingly active and great conference.
We can tweet it with the #HASTAC2014 hashtag too and try to get it distributed amongst folks down there.

Dear Fiona and Alex:
Miriam Peña from the RedHD is currently at HASTAC and I imagine you have had a chance to meet her. I agree with Alex about urging people to join both the GO::DH distribution list but also the RedHD one which is focused primarily on Spanish speaking DH (also Latin American region in general).
I would also suggest that the post to HASTAC includes:
- an invitation to the 2° Encuentro de Humanistas Digitales to be held in Mexico City from the 21 to 23rd of May (http://www.humanidadesdigitales.net/index.php/eventos/encuentro2014)
- notice that we will be holding in June the second event of the Día de Humanidades Digitales (DíaHD) which focuses on DH in Spanish and Portuguese. Last year's event: http://dhd2013.filos.unam.mx/ http://dhd2013.filos.unam.mx/.%E2%80%8B This is a great opportunity to find, get to know and connect with fellow DHers in the region and the language.
If you need my help, let me know.
Best wishes,
Isabel

Oh that's wonderful! Yes, I met her amidst the business that comes with hosting such a big and complicated event.
Miriam - wish we had had spoken more. Would you consider writing a post-conference blog in Spanish, that we could circulate to other folks? Would love your perspective and comments. Were you at the workshops on Sunday?
Alex - that would be great if you or someone else could write a nice introductory and welcoming blog. We're happy to promote it. Maybe ask them to comment in the thread with their name and institution/research project too.

Hi FIona,
I second Igalina's two inclusions. I can write the post. What is the absolute deadline?

Send workshop organizer John Simpson a note at john.simpson@ualberta.camailto:john.simpson@ualberta.ca and we'll happily work out a short extension with you.

Hi Fiona,
I could translate it into Spanish this weekend if you think it would help.
Please, please invite the folks that you met who gravitate towards DH to join our mailing listhttp://www.globaloutlookdh.org/join/ and even more importantly, the list for RedHDhttp://www.humanidadesdigitales.net/!

Is this available in Spanish? I met some amazing folks in Peru at HASTAC 2014 and would like to pass this on, but if you have a version in Spanish it would probably get some more traction.

Send workshop organizer John Simpson a note at john.simpson@ualberta.camailto:john.simpson@ualberta.ca and we'll happily work out a short extension with you.
