Launching Uli: A browser plug-in to mitigate oGBV
Thursday, 28 July 2022
5:30 PM - 7:00 PM IST
Hi all!
We invite you to join us for the launch event of Uli (Thursday, 28 July 2022 from 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM IST). Uli is a browser plug-in, based on machine learning and non-ML approaches, to help mitigate online gender and sexual abuse on Twitter in three Indian languages: Hindi, Tamil and Indian English.
Uli has jointly been produced by The Centre for Internet and Society and Tattle Civic Tech over the past year, with support from Omidyar Network. The tool design is based on a needs assessment with over 50 outspoken users identifying as women or sexual minorities. The data for the ML model was annotated by a team of 18 expert annotators who frequently encountered oGBV on social media or were at the receiving end of online harassment as journalists, activists or community influencers.
With Uli, users can choose to hide offensive content identified by the tool or create their custom slur list to hide triggering words from their feed. They can also use the archive feature to keep a record of problematic posts or call upon their network to seek support. You can read more on the project and the tool here: http://uli.tattle.co.in/
As part of the launch event, we are organising a panel discussion on what tech can/cannot do to mitigate online gender and sexual abuse.
Our speakers -
Shohini Bannerjee from Point of View, Mumbai will share their experience of building TechSakhi, the helpline as a response to online GBV
Malavika Rajkumar from IT for Change will talk about platform accountability for online sexism and misogyny.
Ritesh Kumar from the ComMA project at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra will speak about the challenges of working on aggression detection in low resource Indian languages.
Zoom details and agenda will be shared with you once you have signed up!
Please note that the last date for registrationhttps://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYkduGtpjwrHdy-P06YFvvbUVuPZHGt7o1D is 27 July 2022.
