A worthy gesture from Nuria Rodríguez at the DH2015, who will read her paper in Spanish, as a way to begin talking about opening up the floor to papers read in any language at our largest conference (see below). I encourage those of you on this list who are not part of HDH to attend Nuria's talk.

En relación con el debate sobre los problemas lingüísticos que emergen cuando se opera en una comunidad internacional, y sobre la vocación (real?) de ADHO de ser una comunidad multilingüe, quiero indicaros, para los que vayáis a estar en Lausanne, que la presentación que tengo programada el día 10 de julio (http://dharchive.org/paper/DH2014/Paper-929.xml) la realizaré en español como medio para hacer evidente la sub-representación de otras lenguas en esta conferencia internacional -que pese a todo sigue siendo monolingüe-, y para dar visibilidad a la comunidad de humanistas digitales de habla hispana presente en DH2014.
Como bien dice Domenico en su sugerente post, este tipo de acciones alivian poco el problema y no pueden ser tomadas como soluciones per se, pues solo los presentes en la sala que comprendan el idioma español podrán seguir el hilo de mi presentación ese día (lo que no deja de ser una exclusión). Pero lo asumo como un acto performático necesario para reflexionar y debatir sobre el valor simbólico y material de la lengua.
Tengamos en cuenta que la lingua franca no es algo que exista naturalmente en nuestro mundo. La noción de lingua franca es una construcción sociopolítica que sustancia la situación de superioridad y primacía de una lengua respecto de las otras, con todas las implicaciones que llevamos debatiendo. Recordemos también que las nociones, igual que se construyen, se “deconstruyen”.

What I find interesting about this time around is that we are coordinating with the volunteer "whisperer" group to give everyone access to the talk in Nuria's native tongue. Hopefully, this sort of collaboration can lead to a future where presenters can have the option to present in ANY language at ADHO, with translators on the floor. This would be an ideal situation that I hope we can help create and sustain for the organization.
I realize that Nuria called her gesture a form of 'activism,' and I do hope we take the offering as an opportunity for effecting real and lasting change in the organization in a spirit of collaboration through our personal examples. In that sense, and knowing that we are already allowed to read in Spanish as is, I hear new tones in the word activism as a form of leading by example, acting to inspire others to read in their native or tongue of choice.

Whispe are interesting idea. This will help small groups of people.
Have we ever considered the option to pay for professionnal translation, like the european commission and other major events use? We could have such solutions for keynotes and some talks. In French : traduction simultanée utilisant des cabines de traduction, avec casques pour les participants et interprète professionnel.

I think this is an important conversation, and I welcome both Alex and Marin's contribution's. The main purpose of a conference (apart of all the fun) is to communicate our research, and if others (in the conference or out of the conference I guess) cannot follow what we are saying in my humble bilingual opinion there is a problem.
Speaking of "activism", even the Zapatistas (speaking of activism) spoke and wrote in Spanish, English and other languages, including various indigenous native languages from their region.
It seems that it's a question of priorities when it comes to the expense of professional translation. Other fields do it. Perhaps we don't need some things that get paid for in conferences and we need others instead, like professional live translation/interpreting.
Hence people would be able to speak their own language-- but those who don't speak it will still be able to both appreciate the gesture and understand what is being communicated.
PS I suppose the reference was to DH2014, not 2015 though? By the way, what if all the Polish colleagues decide to present in Polish? How many of you speak Polish?
