Con dLOC, los miembros digitalizan artículos de sus colecciones y los contribuyen al sitio compartido donde todos los artículos están disponibles con Libre Acceso así son completamente disponible sin ningún costo. Además, los académicos, bibliotecarios, conservadores y otros colaboran con dLOC para poner disponible trabajos antiguos y nuevos a través de dLOC. The Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC; www.dloc.com<http://www.dloc.com>) is working on building a Caribbean archive and has many materials already online. For dLOC, partner institutions all digitize materials from their holdings and contribute them to the shared portal where all materials are available as Open Access, and so fully and freely available. Additionally, scholars, librarians, curators, and many other folks frequently partner and collaborate with dLOC to make historical and new works available through dLOC. When working with different collections and host institutions across the world, the rules on and for photography and digitization can be complex, and so it's always good to work with the institutions to ensure that the digitization supports local institutional needs and shared needs for preservation and access. Different scholars have partnered with different local institutions, including the National Library of Jamaica, for specific projects with the resulting digital materials being available in dLOC. I'm the technical director for dLOC and am always available to help with anyone interested in working in or on the Caribbean. Hi everyone, I'm a PhD candidate and Romanticist at the University of Rochester. My concentration is the colonial Caribbean in the long (very long) 19th century, and I've been doing work mostly on Jamaica and Surinam/Guyana, though I'll be expanding into other parts of the Greater Caribbean in the future. A long-term goal of mine is to start digitizing more of the Caribbean archive, and I'm hoping others might be interested in a project like this. I spent a month working in the National Library in Kingston, Jamaica, and I would love to go back and begin photographing and digitizing some of their resources. Their strict rules prohibit photography, but I'm sure that a few interested scholars could help them see the value in getting their works online. Research bursaries: a request for some advice

Hi all, As I noted a couple of days ago, the University of Lethbridge has given me $5,000 to use for Global Outlook DH. The money is budgeted primarily to fund research projects (under the terms of the grant, these research projects must assist me in my research, but since GlobalOutlookDH is one of my research projects, this requirement is easily satisfied). When we were setting GO::DH up, we though that the best use of the money might be to set up a competition for students and perhaps post-docs and junior faculty to propose research topics that they would investigate concerning global access to and participation in the Digital Humanities. We would then commission the best proposals and pay a consultant's fee upon submission of the completed report (again a requirement of the grant). I'd like to start this programme up. But as always, I think it is worthwhile consulting with this group first as to the viability of this plan and for advice on both the size of the awards and the parameters of the competition. I was thinking that a prize of $500 per successfully completed project would be a reasonable amount for each prize. Because I want to keep some money back to assist the web-team in case they need design assistance or similar, I would at this amount be able to offer 8 prizes. What do others think? In terms of the parameters of the competition, I was thinking of something like the following in terms of language: "Call for proposals: GO::DH is soliciting proposals for research on topics involving global access to and use of technology in the arts, humanities, and Cultural Heritage sectors. Possible topics might include: the use of technology in a single project, institution, region, country, or economic region; comparative studies of the use of technology in such contexts in different regions and/or types of economy; barriers to or opportunities for inter-regional collaboration and cooperation; and infrastructure issues. Other topics focussing on the interests of Global Outlook DH are equally welcome. The form the research may take is also open: theoretical or historical analysis, case study, policy proposals, are all also possible forms and formal experimentation is welcomed. A maximum of 4 projects will be commissioned in Spring 2013 (a second competition planned for Fall 2013). To apply, submit a CV and 200 word abstract explaining the proposed topic and format by XXX to YYY. Preference in the competition will be given to students, post-doctoral fellows, junior faculty members at institutions of higher learning, and scholars and researchers not associated with universities." I'm sure this needs a lot of work. But what to people think about the broad outline? Hola: Se trata de un proyecto de panel para LASA que armé conm otros 4 colegas. Se definió en agosto de 2013, y muestra cómo veía los retos de las DH, del modo en que las entendía antes de conocerles en diciembre en la INKE. Bueno, nos aceptaron para el XXXI Congreso Internacional de LASA, que será en Washington DC del 29 de mayo al 2 de junio. Pero solo uno de los integrantes consiguió beca, y aún eso no cubre todo el costo de la aventura. La aventura está calculada en 1 400 usd para pasar una semana allá, pero los PhD de Cuba ganan unos 25-40 usd al mes. Ni modo. Entonces, estoy tocando todas las puertas, a ver si algun grupo o fábrica o universidad o iglesia tiene ganas de oír hablar de Cuba a gente que vive en Cuba, trabaja en Cuba y hasta cree que tiene arreglo y futuro por la vía de la independencia (OK, eso es un utopía, pero es mejor que la utopía neoliberal con los yanquis encima nuestro). Se me ocurre que alguien sabrá de oportunidades para organizar eventos, charlas, mesas o espectáculos de cabaret antes o inmediatamente después del congreso, lo cual nos permitiría pagar los pasajes, la visa… ¡Y el hospedaje! En todo caso, gracias por el tiempo y la buena voluntad. Hello: This is about a session proyect I made up with 4 colleagues. It was made up in the summer, and shows the DH cuban problems as I see it before I meet you all n the INKE conference. Well, we where acepted for LASA's XXXI International Congress, to be held from the 29th day of May to the 1st day of June of 2013, at Washington, DC. Only 1 of us get funding from LASA, but is 400 usd short for the adventure. The budget we set up is 1 400 usd for a week in USA, but a cuban PhD can earn 25-40 usd by month. No way. So! I´m “nocking” every door I see, looking for some gruop, factory, university or church with interest in what has to say 4 persons that lives in Cuba, works in Cuba, and even trust that Cuba has a future with independence (OK, thats utopya, but is better than neoliberal utopya with USA in top of us). I hope anyone will know about events, conferences, round tables or cabaret shows around the LASA's XXXI International Congress days, anything tha may pay the plain tickets, the Visa, and housing! El empleo de la Red en las universidades cubanas resulta limitado por su acceso lento y engorroso. La conexión internacional de Cuba llegó a ser una de las más bajas de América Latina. En el caso cubano ─además de la brecha digital─ la política norteamericana restringió la conexión y declaró que las TIC deberían funcionar como instrumentos para desestabilizar el régimen político. En febrero de 2011, se anunció la llegada a la Isla de un cable de fibra óptica que, proveniente de Venezuela, viabiliza el servicio de banda ancha. Las autoridades cubanas declararon que los sistemas de salud y educación superior tendrían prioridad en la multiplicación de su conectividad. En este escenario, de factible renovación tecnológica y transferencia de conocimientos, el propósito de esta investigación es analizar los actuales usos de la Red en la formación de pregrado, posgrado y extensión universitaria, igualmente valorar su desarrollo potencial. Se sugiere la necesidad de una reforma universitaria que apunte a una mayor cooperación horizontal entre instituciones y sectores, estructurados en redes y espacios comunitarios. Se fundamentará cómo la universidad cubana, a través de una pedagogía crítica y descolonizada, podría contribuir a transformar la información en sociedad del conocimiento. ¿Cómo la universidad informatizada puede servir a la democratización de la cultura, la política y la economía? 2) Yasmín S. Portales Machado Paper: Perfil demográfico de la blogosfera hecha en Cuba. Primeros resultados de investigación Abstract: El blog es actualmente la herramienta más empleada para participar en la esfera pública virtual cubana fuera de los espacios estatales de comunicación y debate. La cantidad de blogs realizados desde la isla se estima entre 520 y 560. Está documentado el interés de los gobiernos cubano y norteamericano por establecer una hegemonía discursiva respectivamente beneficiosa en ese espacio, por lo que la mayoría de las bitácoras aclaran su posición a favor del gobierno actual (oficialistas), opuestas al mismo (disidentes), o críticas de ambos bandos. Este enfrentamiento –que ya acumula varias polémicas de marcada virulencia política y ha tenido efectos en el mundo “real”–, transcurre para un público nacional escaso: en 2010, 14% de la población cubana accedió a Internet o Intranet (correo electrónico y sitios web nacionales), según la Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas e Información. Ese 14% enfrenta cotidianamente, para producir contenido y participar, las dificultades crónicas de acceso desde Cuba, encarnadas en fuerte control gubernamental de contenidos, o un alto costo monetario. Ello ha determinado que la mayoría de las voces de la “blogosfera cubana” sean profesionales procedentes sectores priorizados por el gobierno, estudiantes de educación superior, o personas relacionadas con la “disidencia” política interna. Desde el año 2006, se han realizado pesquisas sobre la “blogosfera cubana”, siempre con objetos de análisis específico. Esta investigación pretende recuperar las características demográficas de quienes realizan blogs desde Cuba y establecer ¿en qué se parecen estas personas a la población general? 3) Yudivián Almeida Cruz Paper: Impacto y posibilidades del acceso a las Tecnologías de la Sociedad de la Información en el nuevo modelo económico cubano. Abstract: Internet es la principal plataforma de intercambio comercial y financiero de estos días. En Cuba las personas, tanto jurídicas como naturales, tienen un acceso limitado a los recursos y servicios disponibles en la red de redes. Estas limitaciones son establecidas desde dentro y fuera del país teniendo como razones cuestiones burocráticas, económicas, tecnológicas y políticas. Estos impedimentos no permiten que, desde Cuba, se pueda hacer un uso efectivo de Internet como plataforma económica en toda su dimensión. En la actualidad Cuba está signada por un proceso de cambios donde la actualización de su modelo económico es el eje fundamental. En este proceso tendrán cada vez más importancia las pequeñas empresas y las cooperativas. Sin embargo, en lo cambios que se suceden, no se vislumbra que se considere la utilización de las tecnologías informáticas y el acceso a la red nacional e Internet como un factor importante que permita dinamizar la economía cubana. Entonces, bajo este escenario de cambios y en un mundo donde las tecnologías de la información son esenciales surgen algunas interrogantes: ¿Cómo podrían las pequeñas empresas y futuras cooperativas utilizar el acceso a las Tecnologías de la Sociedad de la Información en sus modelos de negocio? ¿Cuáles son los principales impedimentos, tanto internos como externos, que impiden este uso? ¿Es posible, en términos prácticos, derribar estos impedimentos? ¿En una sociedad con tan poco acceso a las redes como la cubana tendría sentido la utilización del acceso a estas como elemento importante en la economía interna? ¿Existen experiencias, aún bajo las fuertes limitaciones y dificultades actuales, que tengan a las Tecnologías de la Sociedad de la Información como parte de su modelo de negocio? La respuesta y el análisis consciente de estas y otras interrogantes es un primer paso para considerar el uso de las Tecnologías de la Sociedad de la Información como elemento importante en la actualización del modelo económico y social cubano. 4) Lázaro J Blanco Encinosa Paper: Informatización y empresas en Cuba. Resistencias y caminos Abstract: Se exponen temas sobre los conocimientos prácticos necesarios para la inserción de la informática en la dirección de empresas -lo que implica su asimilación por el personal directivo y su utilización en la planeación, organización y control de los procesos-; hasta su aplicación a aspectos claves para la gerencia. Se reflexiona sobre el camino para incorporar el manejo adecuado de la información, los métodos correctos de su registro y análisis para la toma de decisiones; la conservación y difusión del conocimiento, la aplicación de la mercadotecnia, el uso de Internet, los software especializados y métodos para la incorporación constante de los cambios a los que obliga el desarrollo ascendente, en volumen y velocidad, del universo cognoscitivo moderno. Hello Everyone on the List I am Gurpreet Singh from INDIA. Being fairly large country, just to narrow it down, I belong to Punjab in north of India. Currently I am Assistant Professor in CSE at Lovely Professional University, Punjab, INDIA. Fairly new to the area of DH, I came into contact with DH while studying Corpus Linguistics at Trinity College Dublin. Prior to that I am mainly a DIGITAL person (D of DH) with background in Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Computational Linguistics. My main area of interest is Lexicography for historical and religious texts. Prior to attending DH2012, Hamburg and ESU-C&T, Leipzig and meeting fellow DHumanists there I was thinking there may not be many share my ideas. To my surprise and delight I found quite a few people who were rather interested and appreciated my ideas. Since then I have already received offer for PhD research on my proposal on the same topic. I am hoping to set up DH Institue in my University and would welcome any suggestion and help about the same. Regards G. Indian DH connection

Dear all, it seems that a couple of messages I sent last night did not reach us. I am resending only the second one with a small bit of the first one -- just for the sake of context. (The first one was a response to Ernesto Priego that can be found on the list archive: http://listserv.uleth.ca/pipermail/globaloutlookdh-l/2013-February/000230.h…) --------------------------------- [...] Since 2010 more than 50% of my research time goes to an Italian ONG that ten years ago helped a group of local people in Southern India to set up a school (http://www.ilmondodelleidee.it/?lang=en). We work together for creating new teaching and learning methodologies, and above all to expand our cultural consciousness. Technology sometimes is important, but is only a very small portion of the entire process (especially in the context where we work). All these experiences, among other things, have changed the way I approach scientific work. I am less and less interested in academic disputes, and more and more in cultural challenges and interdisciplinary dialogues. I will be in Southern India for a month starting from late February, and I'd be very happy -- if distances would make it possible -- to exchange ideas and experiences with Indian colleagues involved in DH projects. I guess Dhanashree, Gurpreet and others could point me to the right direction? Thanks! Domenico p.s. Balancing volume and openness

Hi all, There's been some discussion lately on the list and in back channels about the balance between volume of email traffic vs. inclusiveness and openness. I've passed the question on to the executive to see if there is some nice answer to the issue. But since it is an important one and of immediate interest to members, I hope you'll forgive me proposing an interim suggestion: that we concentrate on providing tools to those who find the traffic heavier than they wish, rather than cut back on relevant traffic. I've just added a footer to the list (it should be at the bottom of this email) that explains how to set your subscription to "DIGEST" mode. When you subscribe in digest mode, you receive a single email each day with all the postings from the list for the last 24 hours. It is harder to read (I find), but it solves the traffic problem in one step. Most people are subscribed in NON-DIGEST mode, this means that you receive each email as it is posted. This is much easier to read and respond to, but it can involve a lot of traffic. We can also help each other out by including clear subject lines, deleting excess text in replies, and, if we know how to do so, setting filters in our email clients to group emails (I do this with all my email, for example). Since a major goal of globaloutlookDH is to break down communication barriers that have until now prevented people from different regions working together and learning from each other, I think personally that it is important that we err on the side of letting people now about initiatives and activities rather than on that of reducing traffic at the expense of hiding initiatives. Of course all should be respectful of each other's attention: given that we currently do have a relatively high rate of traffic, we might show this respect by continuing to avoid publishing completely tangential emails (something I've not seen yet). But above all, especially in the beginning, we need patience as we develop a sense of ourselves and the list.
