Dear list members,
DHPoco (Postcolonial Digital Humanities) published an Open Thread yesterday on whether DH has historically provided refuge from race/class/gender/sexuality/disability. We've had a terrific, if US-centric, discussion so far, and hope list members will add their thoughts.
Here is the link: http://dhpoco.org/2013/05/10/open-thread-the-digital-humanities-as-a-histori...
Best, Adeline

Hi Adeline,
I am not sure how to engage with this. They are wonderful and noble ideas, and sure I may agree with them in some other context, but 'post-colonial DH', what could this possible mean?
There is an old joke, there are 2 types of people in the world, those that draw conclusions from incomplete data!
Today is a very sunny day here in Melbourne. I am going to walk down the road and get a cheese cake from the little Greek cafe that always go to. If you or Adeline are ever in Melbourne, perhaps you could join me and discuss your problems with XML ,
Kind regards,

Dear Craig,
Thank you very much for your interest in Postcolonial Digital Humanities. You can find out more about our organization's mission in the blog post co-authored by Roopika Risam and myself: http://dhpoco.org/mission-statement-postcolonial-digital-humanities/
If you're ever in the eastern US, we invite you to sit down with us with a whisky to discuss the relevance of #DHPoco to Australia and its colonial history. Incidentally, I do have first hand experience with that--I completed my B.A. at the University of Melbourne.
All the best,
Adeline

Hi Adeline,
This is really good work. But it isn't that technologies that Digital Humanists use, XML, for example, are politically neutral, it is just that they are something else (a different type of politics). And sure there are refuges from politics, in fact I haven't made it to my favourite Greek cafe yet today, but there are also too many refuges from technology. I like the combination of both, good projects that engage, extend, and challenge people.
There is another old saying. I don't agree with architecture!
Kind regards,
Craig (and glad to discuss Australia post-colonial history with you, but not sure if we have reached that stage yet)

Dear Craig,
Perhaps you could offer your interpretation to the Open Thread. We'd be glad to have you.
Regarding a discussion of Australia's colonial history--Kate Bagnall and Tim Sherratt's work on "the Real Face of White Australia" is an instructive demonstration of an excellent Postcolonial Digital Humanities Project: http://invisibleaustralians.org/

I think it would take far too many cheese cakes to discuss the problems of XML... But above all remember, never never drink whisky over an XML dispute ;-)

Dear Craig,
As one of the list moderators and one of the believers in this little experiment we call GO::DH, let me publicly encourage you to be more respectful of our peers in our international network. We are already fighting against enormous odds. The network in general is supportive of academic discourse on tough issues like race, gender and colonialism because those continue to be important questions to most of us. It doesn't help to dismiss the debates with a condescending offer to sort out technical issues. I know you were trying to be funny. They're not all hits. I should know, I put my foot in my mouth all the time.
As much as we can keep humor alive while remaining civil and professional, I encourage all members of the list to do so.
Here's one: a skeleton walks into a bar and shouts to the bartender "give me a beer and a mop!"
Cheers, A.
