Volunteers for nomination committee sought

Hi all, In addition to candidates for the executive, we are also looking for volunteers to assist on a nominations committee. The function of this committee would be to help ensure we have diversity in the candidate pool--by encouraging people who might make good candidates but are perhaps too shy to run, for example. We don't expect that there would be much work involved: during the nomination period, members would consult with the returning officer and encourage potential candidates to run. When the nomination period closes, members of the committee would review the candidates with the returning officer and, if there were not enough or if it was thought that the pool was not diverse enough, solicit additional nominations to fill out the slate. The Nominations committee s chaired by the returning officer. This year is it Mia, who was hired for the purpose. In future years, it would be a member of the executive who was not up for election. Members of the nominations committee should probably not be planning to stand for election since they might be in a conflict of interest otherwise. An important rule at GO::DH, however, is that we are flexible and accommodating about things like this and assume that people do their best. Global Outlook::Digital Humanities is holding elections under its new bylaws. In subsequent years, we are supposed to hold our elections in January. For this first year, the elections are being held in February. The new bylaws require an elected executive of 8 members. In this first year, all 8 positions are vacant. In subsequent years, half the board will come up for election, meaning we'll always have some continuity. The executive chooses a chair from among its membership and appoints all the officers the organisation requires. The executive is responsible for setting policy for the organisation. Anybody who is a subscriber to globaloutlookdh-l may stand as a candidateand/or vote in the election . As always at GO::DH, we are really eager to encourage regional, linguistic, economic, and cultural diversity among our governing body, so we especially encourage people who feel their communities are not reflected in the broader world of DH to stand for election. The elections will follow a two week nomination period. The nomination period closes February 15. You can nominate anybody who is a member of the globaloutlookdh-l list, including yourself, as a candidate, though we ask that you check with your nominee first. Although this is our first nomination period, experience at other organisations suggests that self-nominations will be the norm rather than the exception. For this first year, half the people elected to the board will be elected to a one year (renewable) term and half will be elected to a two year (renewable) term. When citing emails, do people silently correct typos?

I have a question for advice from this group that might have political implications. In an article I'm about to submit, I cite a number of discussions on this list and humanist about the use of language, especially English. The authors are both native English speakers and non-native speakers and, as is typical in emails, there are a number of small typos. solecisms, and the like. Currently, I have a note at the first citation indicating that "as is normal in as conversational a medium as email correspondence, the quoted passages have small typographical errors and other solecisms. These have not been corrected or otherwise noted." My reason for this is that I don't want to put in a lot of sic or corrections in square brackets. Although I'm a terrible typo offender myself, the case can be more politicised it seems to me when dealing with non-native speakers. I'm uncomfortable acting either as judge or, worse, in my case, calling attention to "errors"--especially since I think they are really more issues of register than actual errors. I could silently correct them, of course, as well, but I don't like that either, in case what I think is an obvious correction turns out to misrepresent something. What do other people think? I've seen /sic/ used before as a form of ad hominem attack and so I generally really hate using it if I can avoid it. But since it also seems nuts to pepper the correspondence with square brackets (and since that could have the same effect as a lot of sics), I don't want to do that either. Call for Volunteers (Nomination Committee) and Nominations for election to the Global Outlook::Digital Humanities executive

In the period December 2013-January 2014, proposed bylaws were circulated for comment to the community (the bylaws can be found here: http://www.globaloutlookdh.org/proposed-bylaws/). These bylaws had been approved by the ad hoc executive we established a year ago to oversee the first year of the organisation. The bylaws establish the procedure by which GO::DH shall be governed in the future. They call for the election of an 8 member executive, from which a chair shall be chosen. The executive will also be responsible for appointing all officers. Normally, the executive will be elected to staggered two year terms, with half the executive up for election each year. For the first year, all positions on the executive are open: half the vacancies will be for a one year (renewable) term, the other half for a two year (renewable) term. Normally, the nominations and elections will occur in January. For a variety of reasons, not least of which was the need to circulate the bylaws for comment, we are one month late this year. I have recently been given funding to hire an administrative assistant, Mia Angelica Alcantara-Santiago, who has agreed to serve as returning officer and chair of the nominations committee for this first election (in future years, these positions will be held by a member of the executive who is not up for reelection). We would like, therefore, to open nominations for candidates for the executive of GO::DH. Any member of our mailing list may stand for election and self-nominations are very welcome. If you would like to nominate somebody for election (including yourself), please email Mia Angelica at caedmon(a)uleth.ca. She will need the name and email address of the nominee. Please ensure that your nominee is willing to stand for election. Please also ask the nominee if they would prefer to stand for a one or a two year term (both terms are renewable; in the future, all terms will be two years). In keeping with the goals and mandate of GO::DH, we strongly encourage diversity in our nominees: there are no linguistic, geographic, or other requirements for office and we encourage nominees from all countries and speakers of all languages to apply. Nominations will close February 15. A ballot will then be prepared with the candidates names and members of the mailing list will be asked to select up to eight names for election. The ballot will close, one week after it opens and the first elected GO::DH executive will be announced. In addition to candidates for election, we are also looking for a few people to assist in the nominations process. Members of the nomination committee will be expected to help ensure we have as diverse a pool of candidates as possible by encouraging people from under-represented groups to put their names forward. I can produce 10, but in the spirit of this list, I thought it might be nice to hear what others suggest. Call for papers and workshop proposals GO::DH/RedHD conference May 19 to 23

Dear colleagues, GO::DH and RedHD are organising a conference and series of workshops on 19-20 May (Workshops) and 21-23 May (conference). The deadline for proposals is January 20th. Paper proposals should be submitted via the easy chair system. If you would like to offer a workshop on any aspect of Digital Humanities, please contact me privately with your ideas. We are interested both in workshops for users and developers. Don't feel bad, Ernesto! It's perfectly fine to suggest our own texts - especially when they are written in a different language than English. So it's good to encourage our community to expand its (our) cultural vision. Now, allow me to switch to Spanish, as "detalle de agradecimiento" to Nuria Rodríguez who has kindly invited me as visiting scholar here in Malaga, where I'm enjoying a mild mediterrenean winter and the legendary Andalusian light! Creo que he aburrido todo el mundo durante demasiado tiempo con el tema de la dominación anglófona (que es dominación discursiva, antes que nada), e yo mismo quizás me he cansado de estar en las trincheras. Creo que al dejar la joventud (es decir, haciendome viejo...) me estoy volviendo pesimista sobre lo que se pueda hacer para cambiar realmente todo esto. El último golpetazo me lo procuró la antología "Defining digital humanities". No se equivoquen queridos amigos y amigas, no quiero criticar el producto: es un trabajo excelente y además muy útil. Sin embargo una ojeada al índice me causó un ataque de depresión. Es triste constatar que a pesar de que entre autores y coordinadores hayan personas sensibles al tema de las genealogías multilaterales de las HD (y de su carácter poligenético), entre las veinte y tantas contribuciones se encuentran dos o tres procedentes de personas que trabajaron en contextos lejos de las universidades de EE.UU y Reíno Unido. Surprendidos, verdad? Cuál es el resultado? Lo de siempre: una representación monocultural y universalista (que es mucho más arriesgado) de las humanidades digitales. Me pregunto: es esta la historia de las HD? Donde están los Jean-Claude Gardin, Tito Orlandi, Manfred Thaller, o el mismo Padre Busa, por ejemplo? Ya sé que se me responderá que el objetivo de ese trabajo no era hacer una historia de la HD. Pues, bien, pero entonces alguien me explique porque estos libros siempre empiezan hablando de "digital humanities" en el contexto "mundial" (ver el sitio web de la editorial: "There are now hundreds of Digital Humanities centres worldwide..."), y luego resulta que su mundo es muy pequeño. No quereís hablar de la historia? Vale, pero en donde se habla de lo que se está haciendo *ahora* en la India, en Mexico, Argentina, China, Japón? Habría sido tan dificil incluir beves resumenes de proyectos, recursos, ideas y visiones procedentes de "otros" mundos? Acaso nosotros - el mundo al fin del mundo - cuando compilamos antologías de - yo que sé - literatura digital hacemos lo mismo? No me parece (ver por ejemplo unas de las primeras que se publicaron en España: M.J. Vega, (ed.), 2004: Literatura hipertextual y Teoría Literaria, Madrid: Mare Nostrum). Todos los autores de la antología son muy conocidos, pero de verdad sus ideas, proyectos, idiomas, etc. representan las humanidades digitales de hoy? Me permito dudarlo. "Defining digital humanities", como muchos libros que se han sacado ultimamente, pretenden representar las humanidades digitales como si fueran un monolito engendrado por las diez instituciones del mundo que más poder y fondos tienen (y tuvieron) en los últimos diez o veinte años. Me parece muy bien que lo hagan, pero que nos cuenten las cosas como son. Yo sugeriría cambiar el título en: "Defining Digital Humanities in the First Class World". Eso sería mucho más honesto. Estas mismas instituciones no paran de decirnos como se deberiá escribir un artículo, una propuesta para una conferencia, un "grant", un proyecto de investigación, etc. Y el 80% de las veces descartan lo que no es conforme al modelo. Acabamos de concluir las entrevistas de los candidatos a las becas Marie Curie del proyecto DiXiT, y vari@s de los que llegaron primeros o primeras en las "short list", es decir, que tenían mejor curriculum, fueron descartados porque no hablaban suficientemente bien inglés... Así va el mundo. En fin, opino que mucho de lo que está ocurriendo en el "mundo" de las HD, es una grave distorción y manipulación histórica, retórica, y cultural. Estoy muy preocupado porque el descuido para la diversidad nunca ha sido una peculiaridad de las humanidades, y ahora es exactamente lo que está ocurriendo. Este descuido no creo sea calculado o voluntario, y sin embargo se suma a otros moviementos globales, muchos más graves de los que estoy discutiendo aquí (ver cita abajo). No cabe duda que la contribución del mundo anglófono es fundamental. Pero no se puede aceptar que cuando todo el mundo habla de HD incluya siempre en la historia a ellos, y cuando ellos escriben la historia solo incluyan a ellos mismos. Tampoco se puede aceptar que la investigación hable solo inglés. Comunicar en inglés entre nosotros es necesario, y divulgar los resultados científicos en este idioma es quizás ya algo imprescindible. Pero comunicar, difundir y transmitir es un asunto, investigar es otro. Los objetos culturales no pueden ser investigados e interpretados solo en un idioma y a través de un sola estructura retórico-expresiva. Esto sería un gran peligro para la diversidad biocultural. Acabamos de concluir unos de los capitulos finales de nuestro libro "The Digital Humanist. A Critical Inquiry" (llevamos más tres años intentando sacarlo a la luz... quien sabe porqué), y estoy trabajando sobre el tema del "biocultural diversity". Esta cita viene muy bien para concluir: "Instead, a lowering of both cultural and biological diversity has been found to correlate with the development of complex, stratified and densely populated societies and of far-reaching economic powers. (...) From ancient empires to today's globalized economy, these complex social systems have spread and expanded well beyond the confines of local ecosystems, exploiting and draining natural resources on a large scale and imposing cultural assimilation and the homogenization of cultural diversity." DHd (Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum) associate organisation of EADH

Die Vorstände von DHd und EADH freuen sich, mitteilen zu dürfen, dass der Verband *Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum* nunmehr offiziell als Regionalverband assoziiert ist mit der *European Association of Digital Humanities* (EADH) und damit zugleich im internationalen Dachverband Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) repräsentiert ist. Mitglieder von DHd haben aufgrund der Assoziierung zusätzlich automatisch den Status eines Vollmitglieds von EADH und erwerben so - ohne zusätzliche Gebühren - Anspruch auf alle entsprechenden Leistungen von EADH und ADHO (Konferenzrabatte, Antragsberechtigung für Stipendien und Fördermaßnahmen, etc.). Der Bezug der EADH-Verbandszeitschrift "LLC. The Journal of Digital Scholarship in the Humanities" ist dabei optional. Unter www.dighum.de wird ab dem 1.2.2014 das Formular zur Beantragung der DHd-Mitgliedschaft freigeschaltet. The video features Ernesto Oroza, who mentions a book, published in Cuba, called El libro de la familia. Does anyone know whether it is possible to get a copy of this book? Has it been digitised? I searched online but, unsurprisingly, couldn’t find it. If anyone can offer directions to find it, I would be grateful. Cheers, BB
