Dear colleagues,
A quick note to inform you that the European Association of Digital
Humanities (EADH, formerly ALLC) has officially changed its visual identity:
http://www.eadh.org
On behalf of the EADH executive committee, thanks to all that were involved
in making this happen.
Best wishes,
Arianna Ciula
EADH secretary
Hi all,
I've recently started trying to expand my daily reading (and tweeting)
about education, the humanities, and technology in a more regular fashion.
Currently, most things I check on a daily or weekly basis are focussed
on Canada, the U.S., or Europe--in fact primarily the UK (NYTimes,
Guardian, Washington Post, Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher
Education, Slate, Salon, the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, National
Post, Economist).
I've recently added Scidev.net and the Times of India to my daily scan.
Does anybody have any other suggestions for useful news-sites to include
in my daily or weekly read? I'm particularly interested in places that
are good on news about higher education, technology, and the
intersection of higher education, university research, and technology
outside of Canada, the U.S., and the U.K.
I can read and/or pick my way through a number of different European
languages (Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Italian--with things getting
worse as you move from left to right). At the same time, however, since
part of my goal is to tweet these to an international audience, things
with an English version will be particularly useful. (I'm trying to
think of ways of sharing non-English language news
internationally--perhaps through a Google Translate URL?)
Any ideas or suggestions? Or criticism of the idea--I can see the
emphasis on English being an issue of self-replicating biases.

Hi all,
I am accepting applications from potential students for an M.A. in
English (Digital Humanities) at the University of Lethbridge. I am
particularly interested in students with interests in
scholarly/scientific publishing, 3D visualisation, Digital Cultural
Heritage, the Public Humanities, and digital Critical/Editorial studies.
You can find out more about my research at my website:
http://people.uleth.ca/~daniel.odonnell/
The University of Lethbridge programme follows an apprenticeship model,
where students apply to work with a specific supervisor and work very
closely with him or her throughout their programme. The M.A. requires a
minimum of 4 courses in addition to a 80-120 page thesis. In the case of
Digital Humanities projects, alternatives to a paper thesis may be
considered. Students registered at the University of Lethbridge are also
eligible to take additional graduate courses at other Western Canadian
Universities including the Universities of Calgary, Alberta, and
Saskatchewan, all of which have strong Digital Humanities programmes.
The University has recently revamped its financial award system. The
amount of funding available varies according to the student's Grade
Point Average (GPA) or equivalent on admission:
> Students with entrance GPAs of 3.3 and above, and subject to
> departmental recommendation, will be
> considered for two full SGS Graduate Assistantships per year, valued
> at $3,600 each ($30 per hour for
> 120 hours). All duties must be assigned and performed during the
> semester in which the assistantship is
> paid. All SGS Graduate Assistantships are subject to the tenets of the
> GSA Collective Agreement.
> Students with entrance GPAs of 3.5 and above, and subject to
> departmental recommendation, will be
> considered for an SGS Tuition Award, renewable for the
> within-residency duration of the student’s
> program. For international students the awards will be valued at
> $13,000 per year and $4,000 per year
> (during the period of continuation fees). For domestic students the
> awards will be valued at $6,000
> per year and $2,000 per year (during the period of continuation fees).
> Students may hold an SGS Tuition
> Award concurrently with an SGS Graduate Assistantship.
> Students with entrance GPAs of 3.7 and above, and subject to
> departmental recommendation, will be
> considered for an SGS Dean’s Scholarship. The scholarship is valued at
> $10,000 per year, and is
> renewable for the within-residency duration of the student’s program,
> subject to terms and conditionsassociated with application for
> external funding. Students may hold an SGS Dean’s Scholarship
> concurrently with an SGS Tuition Award and an SGS Graduate Assistantship.
In addition, I have access to several Research Assistantships for
qualified students. The precise value of these are currently under
review, but they were worth $7000 per year in 2012-2013. These are
awarded on a competitive basis.
The deadline for foreign (i.e. non-Canadian) applications is February 1,
2013. Students considering applying should contact me at
daniel.odonnell(a)uleth.ca as soon as possible and consult the University
of Lethbridge School of Graduate Studies website:

Dear all,
Having been (somewhat enviously) following this list for quite some time
now, I am delighted to finally make a happy announcement, introduce
DHIsrael<http://www.thedigin.org/en/> to the members of this list, and tell
you a little about our past and present activity.
During 2013, a Digital Humanities initiative supported by seed money from
the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, worked to expose the field to Israeli
audiences and to connect the people interested in various aspects of DH
with each other and with scholars from abroad. With additional sponsorship
and help from the National Library, the School of Philosophy and Religions
at the Hebrew University and the Science, Technology and Society department
at Bar-Ilan university, we organized four events: a conference on Hebrew
Manuscripts in the Digital Age<
http://www.thedigin.org/2013/04/25/%D7%9B%D7%AA%D7%91-%D7%94%D7%99%D7%93-%D…>
(in Hebrew), a workshop on Text and Textuality in the Digital Age<
http://www.thedigin.org/workshop-program-text-and-textuality-in-the-digital…>,
a conference and workshop titled "Scholarly use of Web archives - Studying
Israeli Politics on the Web<http
://
www.thedigin.org/scholarly-use-of-web-archives-studying-israeli-politics-on…>",
and a workshop on the use of Computer Technology in the Study of Historical
Networks<http://www.thedigin.org/historical_networks/>. The talks from the
two latter events are in English and available online.
A community of interest that started to form in these meetings grew quickly
with the help of our Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/groups/DHIsrael/>
and Meet-up<
http://www.meetup.com/Digital-Humanities-Israel/events/155930622/> groups,
and in the end of 2013 we established the DHIsrael association. Starting
January 2014 DHIsrael holds a monthly event that will be dedicated to
certain theme or subfield of the digital humanities, each taking place in a
different location. In addition, the first THATcamp<
http://haifa2014.thatcamp.org/> in the area, also named the Ben-Yehuda
Hackathon<http://haifa2014.thatcamp.org/>, will take place next month in
Haifa.
As a DH community, we may be late bloomers, still devoid of funding sources
and still struggling with the challenges of Right-to-Left scripts, but the
near future looks promising for DH in Israel and around it. In the
meantime, we will be happy to meet any Digital Humanists who happen to drop
by - please contact us if you plan to be here!
Happy 2014 from Jerusalem,
Sinai

Topic of the session: *Annotation: Knowledge in the Margin*
An important feature of digital media is that it converges reading and
writing within the same editorial system. The practice of annotation, in
all its forms and media, is commonly seen on the Web. Essentially
publishable, annotations enrich content and contribute to knowledge
production. Since annotation is gaining more ground in the digital
publishing circles , we ask whether it is in the process of becoming a
privileged site of intellectual creation by enabling a paradigm shift in
writing practices and knowledge exchange.
savoir. *
*Guest presentators are* :
- *Marc Jahjah*, Ph. D. Student at EHESS and Laval University (Quebec) in
Humanities, Digital Culture and Literature. His site sobookonline.fr/ has a
section about annotation...
- *Ray Siemens*, Canada Research Chair in Humanities Computing and
Distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of
Victoria.
- *Matteo Treleani**,* He joined the médialab and the project AIME (An
Inquiry into Modes of Existence) as project manager at Sciences Po, Paris.
The seminar is realised in collaboration by *La revue Sens Public*, the
*Iri*, Université de Montréal and McGill University, supported by MSH

Hola colegas, acabo de entrar a la web de Oxford Journals y me he
percatado de que Cuba no está ni en la Lista A ni en la B.
¿Como es entonces que nos vamos a inscribir?
