Reminder: Proposed Bylaws | Global Outlook::Digital Humanities

Hi all, First of all: best wishes for 2014. Secondly: A reminder that proposed bylaws for GO::DH have been available for comment since December 9th: http://www.globaloutlookdh.org/proposed-bylaws/ These have been reviewed and approved by consensus by the ad hoc, volunteer executive and the elected steering committee that established GO::DH last year. Because GO::DH doesn't have any current bylaws (establishing them was a goal of 2013), there is no mechanism in place for approving them other than fiat. Our idea was to solicit public comment and then act according to the nature of that comment. If the comment was favorable (or in the absence of comment), our plan was to assume that they take effect when the first officers and executive elected under their provisions take office at the end of this month. We had proposed a review period ending at the end of December. Because of the holiday break, and because accommodation and flexibility are important principles of the bylaws, We can afford an extra week for comment. If you have any suggestions, criticisms, comments, or endorsements that you would like to inform the adoption of these bylaws, please say something on the list or privately before 0000, 8 January, AoE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anywhere_on_Earth). Assuming there are no significant objections, we'd like to start recruiting potential candidates for election to the first bylaw-governed executive right away on the 8th. A proposal for a new working group

Hi all, Laurie Taylor and I have just been talking about the idea of setting up a new working group at DH: a group focused on ways of facilitating donations of equipment or sharing services. The impetus for this comes from two projects we are thinking of at the U of L. One is to collect and donate computers that are being decommissioned this coming spring university wide (we got a grant to replace a large number of computer lab and faculty workstations); the other is some web mirroring that we are looking into doing for a university that doesn't have a very robust infrastructure. Laurie also knew of examples of donations of computing equipment in the past to Haiti, for example. This may be is a little bit more straight aid than is the norm for GO::DH (which is primarily /not/ about aid but about sharing knowledge, research, and experience every which way). But it also may be something we may be able to help each other in: there are some logistics involved that people who've done this before elsewhere might be able to help advice on for example; there also may be a need to fundraise for certain opportunities. Digital Humanities Opportunity: XQuery Summer Institute

Dear GO::DH Community, With apologies for cross-posting, please consider joining us for this event: Vanderbilt University invites you to participate in a summer seminar for humanities scholars working with XML documents (such as TEI, EAD, or MODS). The XQuery Summer Institute is designed for scholars with basic experience marking up texts who would like to acquire advanced skills in how to query and computationally analyze XML documents. We welcome applications from archivists, faculty members, librarians, alt-ac professionals, and advanced graduate students. Over the course of two weeks, we will teach you how to program in XQuery, a language designed for querying and manipulating XML documents. You will leave the Institute knowing how to maximize the value of your XML encoding. The Institute will take place from Monday, June 9 to Friday, June 20 in 2014 on the campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. It will be led by six instructors with experience in the digital humanities (see http://xqueryinstitute.org/instructors), including Jonathan Robie, Lead Editor of the XQuery and XPath specifications at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Proposed bylaws published

Hi all, I've been overdue in publishing proposed bylaws for GO::DH. You can now see them here: http://www.globaloutlookdh.org/proposed-bylaws/ Because GO::DH is an experiment in global community building (and ADHO SIG development) we began the year without bylaws and set establishing some as a main task for the founding executive. Over the course of the last six months or so, the executive and the smaller steering group of officers has been developing a set of bylaws to establish governance, elections, and all the other things a community needs if it is to thrive. The initial work was led by Barbara Bordalejo, who did some research on the bylaws and comparable scholarly societies and communities. She wrote a first draft based on those at digitalmedievalist.org. These were then heavily revised by the steering group, the bylaws committee, and subsequently the larger executive. The results of that process is available at the website. Since we currently don't have any bylaws, the approval process is not clear. In the absence of any other rules, my proposal is that we open these bylaws up for discussion on the general list for the next two weeks. If they prove uncontroversial and it appears that there is a consensus in favour of their adoption, then, at the end of the two weeks, we as a community will delegate the Executive to make any final editorial changes and approve them on our behalf. If, on the other hand, it appears they are unsatisfactory in some way or that we are not developing a consensus in their favour, we will ask the executive to begin a consultation process with a goal of resolving such differences as quickly as possible and proposing a compromise set of bylaws for a vote by the entire mailing list membership. If the bylaws pass over the next two weeks, then the next step will be soliciting nominations for the new Executive as described in the bylaws. The elections to the Executive are required to be finished by Feb. 1, 2014. Please do not be shy about discussing this proposal. The post-holder should start on 1 April 2014 and will be responsible for the analysis and improvements of technologies for the creation and publication of digital scholarly editions. They will be familiar with the Guidelines of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and be skilled in using related technologies such as XSLT to generate digital scholarly editions from TEI P5 XML source files. The post-holder will contribute to the teaching at the Digital Humanities at Oxford Summer School and the DiXiT TEI training workshop. Of all the objects connected to the act of reading, the omnipresent screen is now considered more important than the medium of paper in terms of knowledge transfer. Yet, with regards to networks and services which connect interface users, we know that the digital medium presently invests (or rather is invested) in all aspects of technical organology, and underlying this is the fact that we are called to observe and act both through and beyond the screen. We should thus question how well the technical features of these new support systems help improve editorial devices, and how new properties of digital support help shape our practices of reading and writing and even the very foundations of our knowledge. *Qu’est-ce qu’un support ?* *La notion de support à l’époque du numérique ne se résume plus, comme pour l’objet imprimé, à la simple interface d’écriture et de lecture (l’inscription et l’interprétation de l’inscription).
