Hi friends, I'm trying to compile a list of all the people/projects that have worked on TEI projects in non-european languages. Any of you working on this? I found this in the TEI meeting minutes, but not much follow-up that I can see "PW notes that if the ambition of TEI is global, we should reach out to people using the TEI for non-European/N American work. One of the two P5 translations was done in Chinese — in support of a rising TEI community. Contributions from Asia have gotten silent and worth exploring the cause of this silence." Best, a.

What does it mean to translate an iconic American text - Henry David Thoreau's Walden - into a video game? Tracy Fullerton<http://www.tracyfullerton.com/main/bio/>, Director of the University of Southern California Game Innovation Lab, and her team set out to do that with Walden: A Game<https://gameinnovationlab.itch.io/walden>, which recently won Game of the Year and Most Significant Impact at the Games for Change Festival. In honor of the bicentennial of the birth of Thoreau (1817-1862), one of America's greatest naturalists and essayists, Fullerton is coming to Loyola University Chicago for a panel discussion about the game on Monday, November 13th, at 3 pm in the Klarchek Information Commons at Loyola Univeristy Chicago, 4th Floor. Walden, A Game is a six-hour, exploratory narrative that begins in the summer of 1845 when Thoreau moved to the Pond and built his cabin there. You follow in his footsteps, surviving in the woods by finding food and fuel and maintaining your shelter and clothing. At the same time as you strive to survive off the land, you are encouraged to explore the beauty of the woods and the pond, which hold a promise of a sublime life beyond your basic needs. And, you can interact with characters from Thoreau's life including mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson, sister Sophia Thoreau, editor Horace Greeley, activist A. Bronson Alcott, naturalist Louis Agassiz among others. Following Fullerton's talk, a panel of Loyola faculty and students from different disciplines across Loyola University Chicago will reflect on their experience playing the game. Why we should leave ADHO, go minimal and return to the planet.

Dear all, As promised, here is the document with the argument for why we should leave ADHO <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BBq-mXnzJgw_5vVe4zlCDRXev9c5YAq9O6eDdt3…>. The first round was written by Dr. Roopika Risam and me, but those in support can add their own rationales and arguments, or comment on ours. Instructions are in the Google Doc. A second argument will be prepared by those who support the idea of becoming a Constituent Organization of ADHO. I think Dan O'Donnell (Canada), Barbara Bordalejo (Argentina) and Glen Worthey (USA) have signaled they would be interested in drafting such a document. Hopefully sooner, rather than later, so we can proceed with deliberations. After the second argument is made, a third argument is possible if enough members feel there should be a middle path, or a "third way." We should have a collective deadline of December 1 for deliberations. In that time, we encourage general and executive members to debate on the list what you would like to see GO::DH become. All of your discussion, comments, will be taken into consideration as the executive votes on a final decision by December 15. Parables of Care

Dear all, *[tl; dr*: You can download the publication, read more about it, including user feedback, reviews and interviews with authors and participants at https://blogs.city.ac.uk/parablesofcare/] <https://blogs.city.ac.uk/parablesofcare/> As we all know one of the anxieties around digital humanities is how we define the field/practice. What gets called DH, who gets to 'do' DH, how many resources, how much funding, do we need to 'do' DH? Without calling it 'DH', I led a little (but labour intensive) project in which we worked with an open online resource that collects, curates and shares good practice in dementia care. (Dementia, by the way, is one of the major societal changes today, as we live longer and social care keeps suffering budget cuts). What we did was follow Human-Computer Interaction Design research processes to work with users in not only testing the online resource but in figuring out whether we could adapt some of the stories collected by the resource in comic book form. The result is a digital-and-print publication. The 'digital publication' is a simple static PDF, mostly meant to be shared via the open access institutional repositories of the participating institutions. The print publication is distributed to the public by request and is currently being distributed within the UK to libraries, NHS Trusts and mental health charities. Whether we could have done something more interactive and properly born-digital is unquestionable--that we lacked the funding and working conditions is unquestionable too. However we are happy with the result and the feedback we are receiving. I think this may be an example of how with relatively small resources one can at least aspire to a significant impact amongst targeted demographics hopefully beyond academia. (We already have data the comic has reached different occupations-- percentages chart attached). Inclusive Design and Dissemination of Digital Scholarly Editions

Dear GO:DH community members, The topic of providing access to digital publications continues to be a crucial focus point for those involved in digital textual scholarship and scholarly editing. We'd therefore like to reach out to textual scholars, digital editors, digital librarians, software developers, computer scientists, web designers -- in short, all those involved in the creation, publication, and dissemination of digital scholarly editions. Earlier this year, as part of a Marie Sklodowska-Curie DiXiT ITN(Digital Scholarly Editions Innovative Training Network) collaboration, we set up a survey <https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MCDRMYY> on Inclusive Design and Dissemination in Digital Scholarly Editing, which you may have seen passing by on some listservs. After a successful presentation of the preliminary results of the survey (at the Digital Humanities conference in Montreal this summer [link <https://dh2017.adho.org/abstracts/373/373.pdf>]) we continue to expand our research into this important issue. Dear Alex and dear all: as anyone on this list (and beyond this list) knows, I've been very critical of the ADHO model for the last six or seven years. I've made a number of proposals addressing institutional, cultural and linguistic issues (see in English: https://www.digitalstudies.org/articles/10.16995/dscn.274/), and in the next weeks I'll try to add my contributions to the "Leave" document. So the first thing I'd like to say is that I support Alex and Roopika's move. What other friends and I had in mind as an istrument to overcome the ADHO's model was a Federative system, but, admittedly, this is not going to happen anytime soon. Alex and Roopika's proposals seem a good start insofar as it tries to return to a project-based community that goes beyond the classical model of accumulation of symbolic power (i.e. academic visibility, etc.). Two of the weakest points of ADHO were (and are) in my opinion the lack of transparency and the an unequal representation system, mainly based on income. So I particularly liked this sentence: "guaranteed representation in the executive from agreed-upon, major regions of the planet." While I second the "GO::DHexit", I would also like to add that at this point we need more information about the negotations between GO::DH and ADHO. In reading Alex and Roopika's document I couldn't help perceiving a sub-text of unspoken issues. It also worries me when Barbara says she didn't know about ADHO asking GO::DH to pay membership fees, because if she didn't know, then who knows? All the best Domenico

Call for DH2018 Reviewers

Dear all, I'm honored to share with you the 2018 Call for Reviewers of the DH2018 conference to be held in Mexico City. Many of our original and current members, including the wonderful RedHD team <http://www.humanidadesdigitales.net/>, have worked hard to see the conference take place in Mexico City and expand the scope of reviewers, and therefore the global professional formation. The message below is slightly modified for address. Best, Alex ------ Dear colleagues, The DH2018 Program Committee is happy to let you know that we’re building on last year’s effort to expand our pool of reviewers. This expansion is in line with ADHO’s conference protocol [http://adho.org/admi nistration/conference-coordinating/adho-conference-protocol] that new reviewers be invited to participate in the DH conference review process. We believe not only that an expanded reviewer pool will make the work of the PC easier and better (on the “many hands make light work” principle), but also that reviewing for the conference is one of the most important ways of engaging our community, encouraging greater community ownership of our conference, and enabling deeper involvement in it. This year in particular, with the conference being hosted in Latin America, we are keen to recruit more reviewers in the two primary languages of the region: Spanish and Portuguese. As you may know, it is the recommendation of ADHO’s Multilingual/Multicultural Committee to accept conference submissions in a particular language as long as there are sufficient reviewers in that language; it is our hope that we can add Portuguese to the DH linguistic community in this way, and that DH2018 will be remembered as a small watershed in the promotion of multilingualism and multiculturalism. Candidates must meet at least two of the following reviewer requirements: - Be currently associated (or have been recently associated) professionally with an institutional DH program, project, or initiative within the last three years. - Hold at least a Master’s degree or equivalent in a DH-relevant discipline (including, but not limited to, the Humanities, Social or Natural Sciences, Library Science, Fine Arts, etc.) - Have presented at an ADHO-, CO- or SIG-organized conference, symposium, colloquium, or equivalent, including those organized by RedHD, one of DH2018’s host organizations - Have published a DH-specific article or essay in a scholarly journal or volume (either print or electronic). The Steering Committee approved the following wording in terms of ADHO’s ongoing efforts to support diversity and inclusion within our discipline: “Nominations should reflect ADHO's mission and seem relevant to improve the diversity and inclusivity of the conference in consideration of language and gender. In putting forward a candidate, the nominator should be cognizant of and attentive to their own organization's statement of diversity.” Nominees should submit their information and qualifications, and indicate their willingness to serve as reviewers, by *October 31, 2017* on this form: *http://bit.ly/DH2018reviewer* <http://bit.ly/DH2018reviewer> Self-nominations are welcome. We will review all the nominees’ qualifications, compile a list of proposed reviewers, and submit it to Claire Clivaz for final review and approval by the CCC.
