All best, Élika ***** The Digital Scholarship Group at Northeastern University is pleased to announce an IMLS-funded national forum on "Design for Diversity": a public conversation that focuses on constructing a collaborative pedagogical toolkit to encourage inclusive and ethical practices in information sciences and system design. This IMLS grant will support a series of public events and working meetings on the ways in which information systems embody and reinforce cultural norms, and ask how we can design systems that account for diverse cultural materials and ways of knowing. The end results will be a teaching and learning toolkit for cultural heritage practitioners in systems design which will better inform both future work and the education and professional development of new practitioners. We envision this toolkit combating problems of colonizing, appropriating, silencing, and marginalizing; we are counting on your participation and involvement. It is essential to the success of this project that we partner with participants with a broad range of experience and backgrounds, to help us think through these complex questions of design and pedagogy from many different perspectives. We are especially interested in partners who are practicing cultural heritage systems design, whether in a formal organization or not: we seek activists, community organizers, and other grassroots collectors of history as well as librarians, archivists, scholars, and curators. We seek to involve the many different kinds of people undertaking information systems design, from activities like cataloging, building metadata schema, and creating automated re-use policies to building databases, designing web interfaces, and more. II International Summer School on Digital Art History

Dear colleagues, It is a pleasure to announce the 2º edition of the International Summer School on Digital Art History, that will take place in Málaga (Spain), from September 4 to 13 (2017). The application period is now open (until June 30). More information at: http://historiadelartemalaga.uma.es/dahss17/en Following the success of the first edition last year, the International Summer School on Digital Art History (DAHSS), a joint initiative of the University of Málaga and the University of Berkeley, will celebrate the second edition from September 4 to 13 (2017), in Málaga (Spain). Under the title of Data-Driven Analysis and Digital Narratives, DAHSS pursues two objectives: a) to configure an interdisciplinary framework to expand the IT skills of students, scholars and professionals dealing with the production, representation and communication of knowledge in the fields of Art History, Visual Culture and Cultural Heritage; b) to build a environment where creative, innovative and collaborative research practices are encouraged and promoted. The course has a theoretical-practical orientation: theoretical exchange and critical discussions will be combined with practical sessions (lab-based sessions), through which participants will work collaboratively in common projects. The results of these projects will be publicly presented the last day of the course. The course is organized around two complementary modules. Module 1 (Data-Driven Analysis) is devoted to discover the opportunities provided by the access to and the computational process of large cultural datasets to extract new knowledge, elaborate new interpretive approaches and build new stories about culture. A wide range of methodologies, analysis techniques, tools and softwares, as well as metadata structures will be explored and discussed. Module 2 (Digital Narrative and Interfaces) is devoted to investigate new ways of telling stories about culture in the digital media. From a transdisciplinary perspective, it will be explored experiences performed by electronic literature and new media artists as inspiring models to consider in the building of new narratives in the field of Art History and Visual Culture. Complementary, participants will acquire competencies to manage certain tools which will enable them to build their own stories with the datasets analyzed in module 1. Knowledge Sharing: Chile, South America, and the World You are invited to join us for a one-day workshop to discuss the current and future states of knowledge sharing and scholarly communication. We will explore the Chilean context of creating and communicating research and scholarship, with the goal of understanding the relationships between local practices, innovations, and challenges and the recommendations and assumptions embedded in various initiatives to create a more open and egalitarian system knowledge sharing. Researchers, students, librarians, and technologists interested in learning about and addressing issues related to access to information, scholarly production and publishing, and scientific communication are encouraged to attend. This workshop is intended to contribute to the conversation about how a more open system of knowledge can be built for and by researchers in Chile, South America, and other global communities. The future of GO::DH

Dear friends, I'm very honored to be your GO::DH chair for 2017-2018. My deep thanks to those of you who voted, and to the members of the executive for giving me their vote of confidence. Time to roll up our sleeves! Our dreams of a community of digital humanities practitioners in dialogue and collaboration with each other across continents and language barriers has not changed. The new executive is actively planning a series of exciting programmatic activities and structural changes along these lines to help us tap into the potential of our global community, but we should not and could not do this work without you. Before we start rolling out any new team initiatives, we wanted to bring back the conversation to all of you, our members, especially around the existential question: who are we and what do we want? As you know, we were founded as a special interest group of ADHO (Alliance of Digital Humanities Organization), but our work was never limited to activities within the organization. In fact, some of our best work happened decidedly outside of it. At the same time, we know that we have been able to facilitate engagement between ADHO and many of our members and friends here, for their professional benefit at home. We find ourselves now at a crossroads. For a year now, the executive of GO::DH has been in conversations with ADHO about becoming a Constituent Organization (CO). Depending on the specific model to follow, this would give us some voting power at the highest level of the organization, comparable though perhaps not equal to the COs with paying members. Besides voting power, we might be able to create more opportunities for our members to participate in the annual conference and receive exposure for their work. The hard question we have been asking ourselves is whether becoming a CO would draw us away from the possibilities of acting independently to focus our energies on a vibrant, critical conversation with each other, and away from innovative projects that can help us understand and promote the global landscape of digital humanities. That said, I wanted to come to you and ask *you*, how do you feel about ADHO in 2017? What level of engagement should we have with them? What would you like to see? Mapping Multilingualism and Digital Culture (workshop), June 22nd

Dear Colleagues We're organising a workshop at King's College London next month to explore interactions between Modern Languages research and digital culture, as part of the 'Language Acts & Worldmaking' project, funded by the AHRC as part of the OWRI initiative. Registration is free, and we hope some of you can join us - please find further information below: ------------------------------- Mapping Multilingualism and Digital Culture (workshop) King's College London 22 June 2017, 10 am to 5.30 pm Modern Languages research increasingly happens in a context which is influenced by digital culture, and although this is often forgotten or ignored, global digital culture is profoundly multilingual. But what do we really understand about interactions (and tensions) between the two? How is Modern Languages research transformed by digital culture, and how can a multilingual perspective help us to engage with the 'Digital' more effectively? This workshop aims to critically examine the current state of Modern Languages research which is somehow digitally mediated - whether that be in its creation (editing), methods (virtual ethnography; social and cultural analytics; distant reading), transmission (as code), dissemination (digital publishing; visualisation), object of study (as 'data'), infrastructure (digital archives; ecosystems), mobility/mutability or its social dimension (crowdsourcing; social media). It explores how the study of other cultures, their languages, literature, art and history are altered as a result, and what this means for researching (and learning) Modern Languages. The workshop will bring together a range of academics, digital practitioners and cultural sector respondents in order to study the challenges and opportunities in merging digital and non-digital methods into an approach which integrates critical thinking, humanities-based interpretative skills, creativity and digitally mediated knowledge production. The workshop sets out to explore the following questions: * How does digital culture alter the way that Modern Languages research is carried out? * How have research questions relating to Modern Languages been articulated (and answered) using digital technology? * How have scholars and practitioners studying 'the digital' approached and interpreted Modern Languages research? What tools and methodologies have they employed, and what opportunities are there for broader application? * To what extent have networked communication, open culture, collective intelligence and participatory architectures influenced the execution and transmission of Modern Languages research and what are the opportunities/barriers? * What new research methods or research objects are created as a result? And what implications does this have for teaching/learning? The workshop will start with a keynote speech from Professor Claire Taylor (University of Liverpool), and includes panel discussions, group activities and presentations on a number of topics from digital researchers & practitioners with an interest in Modern Languages. This is the first in a series of events organised by the 'Digital Mediations' strand on the Language Acts project http://languageacts.org/ and funded by the AHRC as part of its OWRI initiative. The strand surveys digital data, tools and methodologies commonly used in Modern Languages research (with a particular, but not exclusive, focus on Spanish and Portuguese-language research) and explores the potential and limitations of digital culture in a language-based research ecosystem. There will also be opportunities to engage (digitally) with the questions raised by the workshop before, during, and after the event: we will be opening up debate online and asking people to nominate their favourite digital tools, projects and publications involving Modern Languages research.
