DIGITAL HUMANITIES AUSTRALASIA 2014: Expanding Horizons The Australasian Association for Digital Humanities (aaDH) is pleased to announce its second conference, to be held at The University of Western Australia, 18-21 March, 2014. The aim of DHA 2014 is to advance digital methods, tools and projects within humanities research and develop new critical perspectives. The conference will provide a supportive, interdisciplinary environment to explore and share new and advanced research within the digital humanities. The conference is sponsored by iVEC@UWA, The University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University, Perth Convention Bureau, and the Australian Literature Westerly Centre, UWA. INDIGENOUS AND CROSS-CULTURAL DIGITAL RESEARCH • Cross-cultural studies • International comparisons SUBMISSIONS Abstracts of no more than 600 words, together with a biography of no more than 100 words, should be submitted to the Program Committee by 14 September 2013. All proposals will be fully refereed. Proposals should be submitted via the online form at http://www.conftool.net/dha2014/ Please indicate whether you are proposing a poster, a short paper (10 mins + 5 mins questions), a long paper (25 mins + 5 mins questions), or birds of a feather session (60 mins). Proposals will be assessed in terms of alignment with the conference themes and the quality of research within these or related themes. Presenters will be notified of acceptance of their proposal on 14 October 2013. PROPOSAL TYPES 1. Poster presentations Poster presentations may include work-in-progress as well as demonstrations of computer technology, software and digital projects. A separate poster session will take place during one day of the conference, during which time presenters will need to be available to explain their work, share their ideas with other delegates, and answer questions. Presenters are encouraged to provide material and handouts with more detailed information and URLs. Poster guidelines are available on the conference website to help you prepare your poster. 2. Short papers Short papers are allocated 10 minutes (plus 5 minutes for questions) and are suitable for describing work-in-progress and reporting on shorter experiments and software and tools in early stages of development. 3. Long papers Long papers are allocated 25 minutes (plus 5 minutes for questions) and are intended for presenting substantial unpublished research and reporting on significant new digital resources or methodologies. 4. BoFs (Birds of a Feather sessions) are 60 minute sessions that should be used for guided discussions on one topic. BoFs are informal, open presentations for exploring key community issues and debates within the digital humanities. Do you have an issue to discuss or are unsure how to progress a tiopic? For example: • Digital humanities what are the risks and rewards? or • Digital humanities and computer science as an interdisciplinary challenge – where to from here? 60 minutes will be provided for each session. Each speaker will have a short time to present their points for discussion and the audience should also have an opportunity to comment (recommend allocation of up to 40% of the total time available). The Global Outlook::Digital Humanities Essay Contest Deadline has been extended until Noon GMT July 6, 2013. A description of the competition can be found below and at the GO::DH website: http://www.globaloutlookdh.org/global-outlookdigital-humanities-global-digi… The deadline is being extended in recognition of the diverse nature of the target audience and to ensure that nobody is prevented from contributing due to infrastructure problems or late notice of the competition. Participants who have already made a submission but feel that they could profit from the extension are welcome to resubmit their work by the extended deadline, otherwise the original submission will be entered in the competition. In the case of multiple submissions from the same author, the committee will use the latest submission unless otherwise instructed. Hi all, A call from ADHO chair Neil Fraistat for new Special Interest Groups. Global Outlook was the prototype for this initiative, which gives you a sense of the type of thing they are looking for. What is neat about the idea is that it provides an alternate way of understanding ADHO (and DH) which is different from both national and disciplinary models. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear all, The Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) invites its members to propose a Special Interest Group (SIG). By forming a SIG, those with similar professional specialties, interests, and aptitudes can exchange ideas, stay current, and mobilize to pursue common goals across the boundaries of ADHOs individual Constituent Organizations. Special reminder: Essay Competition

Hi all, I'd like to encourage everybody on this list to promote the essay prize call, especially if they have contacts who may not be on lists like humanist, digital medievalist, tei, and the like. We have had a pretty good response, but since it is a premise of GO::DH that we seem to exist in networks that do not always intersect well, I'd like to call on the experience and expertise of this list to make sure that the call is getting to everybody who may be able to contribute usefully. The original webpage announcing the competition is here: http://www.globaloutlookdh.org/global-outlookdigital-humanities-global-digi… The deadline is June 30th, but we are going to be a little flexible around that deadline but ensure nobody is excluded because they have last minute infrastructure glitches (also I'm actually travelling that day and giving a paper the next and so won't be checking the email). The competition is open to anybody at any rank, any type (or absence) of institutional affiliation, and from any region. Submissions can be in any language (we're going to find somebody who can read things we can't on our large and linguistically diverse adjudication panel). We especially welcome essays from researchers and students working in or on Mid and Low Income economic regions, though the competition is by no means restricted to people from those regions. I am looking for examples of DH projects in curating and/or critiquing histories of institutional knowledge at particular institutions. My own institution is launching such a project and it is curious about examples in which a DH project has been designed around an institutional history of knowledge task. Can anyone help me to find such examples, should they exist? Some ideas on list language

Hi all, I had somebody ask me the other day about whether there should be any special advice for posting to a list like this--"like this" in the sense of explicitly multicultural, very conscious of multilingual issues, and so on. We've obviously been discussing aspects of language use in a variety of contexts on the list, but I don't think we've had a metadiscussion about how we should post to this list--things to keep in mind, to be careful of, and so on. Here's some of the things I suggested. What do others think? 1) Be really careful about humour, especially humour that could be misread as being dismissive, insulting, or mockery. One reason for this is because, as is well known, email doesn't convey tone well at all. But in the case of this specific list, we are also dealing with a variety of different academic cultures--what comes across as normal bantering in a more free-rolling academic culture may appear to be extremely aggressive in another. 2) Be careful about allusions to pop culture, and national history and politics. Many people may not get them. But more importantly, allusions and inside jokes shared among a small group of people can quickly create a sense of exclusion among those who don't know the references being made. 3) Since this is an academic list, we will find ourselves disagreeing with each other, attempting to correct or improve each other's ideas, and so on. In keeping with (1), be careful about how you phrase these disagreements: again, what may seem like relatively light criticism in one academic culture may seem crushing in another; and especially if there are language issues involved, it can be difficult to clear things up. This doesn't mean that we can't criticise each other's ideas, but rather that we should always try to phrase this disagreement as constructively and supportively as possible. 4) Generally, try to write in short sentences and using common words (this is true, BTW, of all languages on the list): you are being read by people who are not as strong in your language as you are. 5) Always try to provide context for people: use more links to external sites than you might normally (e.g. to explain ideas and give examples.
