Thanks for the info about DíaHD. I've featured Ernesto's post on the front page of HASTAC. If someone wants to make a 640x300 banner we can include it in the rotating image banner on the front page, with a link to his blog. One thing to note: if folks don't have their own blog already, we are always happy to help them get set up on HASTAC to blog there. They can register and blog on the same day, and submit that info to DíaHD. You can cross-post on your own blog if you already have one, and the benefit is having a bit of a bigger audience built into the community. Lots of people still don't have their own blog and it can seem intimidating to start posting on your own site for a project like this. If any of you need help getting set up, contact me off-list and I will help you personally. If you need help in Spanish, I am sure Ernesto will be happy to help too. I've sent it to a few of our relevant contacts, and we are glad to help however we can. Digest problems

Hi all, Some people had been reporting that they were getting many digest emails in a single day, which defeats the purpose, of course. As I thought, the problem was that it was sending out an email everytime there was more than 50kb in the queue. I've now set the threshold for sending an email to 1MB. This means that if there is more than 1MB of traffic in a 24hour period, it will send out a digest email each time it hits 1MB; if there is less than 1MB in a 24 hour period (or at the end of the 24 hour period), it will send out a single email. Let me know if this causes any problems. Un saludo muy cordial a tod@s Domenico ------------------------ Estimados socios de la HDH: Os comunico que acaba de publicarse en nuestra página web el anuncio de celebración del Día de las Humanidades Digitales (DIAHD) 2013, organizanda por primera vez en español y portugués este año (desde 2009 se ha celebrado en inglés) http://dhd2013.filos.unam.mx. En noviembre de 2012, durante las jornadas sobre HD que se celebraron en Elche, organizadas por Alejandro Bia, se acordó –a propuesta de Paul Spence, del Department of Digital Humanities, King’s College London– la organización del Día de las Humanidades Digitales. Él se ocupó de ir coordinando a las entidades invitadas a participar, inicialmente: CenterNet, la Red de Humanidades Digitales (RedHD) de México, y nuestra asociación. Posteriormente, se han sumado la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad Autónoma de México y centros de habla portuguesa: Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa Humanidades Digitais, Universidade de São Paulo El coordinador nos ha ido pidiendo algunas decisiones (para ir creando la plataforma web, para acordar la fecha del evento…) y Carmen Isasi y yo, en representación de nuestra sociedad, hemos estado colaborando (por ejemplo en las traducciones al español de textos que estaban en inglés). Finalmente, hoy es el día en que se nos ha dado la indicación de hacer difusión o publicidad del evento y, como socios, sois los primeros en ser informados. Ya he colocado el anuncio en nuestra página de la sociedad, donde podéis verlo. Allí tenéis el enlace a la plataforma donde podéis inscribiros y crear un blog. Conviene hacerlo pronto, para ir introduciendo contenidos que uno quiera publicar sobre sus trabajos o proyectos durante unos días antes del evento, para hacerlo con la debida calma. Dear list members, I've been tied up with a number of things lately and been unable to complete a response to the earlier thread about multilingualism and globalization, which I hope to do soon, as I feel that some of the most important issues have not yet been addressed thoroughly enough. While reading the live tweets (hashtag #rp13) of the re:publica 13 conference now taking place in Berlin, I ran across this abstract for a paper by Nishant Shah, who directs the research portfolio at the Centre for Internet and Society in Bangalore (http://cis-india.org/author/nishant). It seems to me to speak to some of the issues that have been raised as well as some that have not, and that I hope we can discuss more fully in the future. David "Say 'Digital Humanities' One More Time: Technology, affect and learning in emerging information societies" Nishant Shah <https://re-publica.de/en/users/nishantshah> One of the ironies of the local-global divide is that certain practices within the local sphere often precede the global nomenclatures that are assigned to them. ‘Digital Humanities’ is a prime example of this phenomenon where a clutch of practices which emerged with the rise of digital technologies and their integration into the national policies on higher education and learning, are now retrospectively understood as ‘Digital Humanities’. So even as the term was gaining currency in the European and North American context, becoming one of the buzzwords through which new conditions of pedagogy and education were imagined within the Universities in the North-West, it had almost no takers in the emerging knowledge industries of South Asia in general, and India in particular. Within this context, it has now become natural, for all talks about education to eventually veer towards infrastructure. There is enough reason for that, when we look at the pitiful lack of resources in the country vis-à-vis the size of the population, and many of the larger problems endemic in higher education today, are tied down to this massive infrastructure deficit.Simultaneously, there has always been a severe fragmentation and compartmentalisation of knowledge systems within the academia, which is not restricted to only the Humanities which is increasingly facing the pressure to make itself relevant and produce work-forces for a global finance driven market. The questions of professionalising and mainstreaming humanities and social sciences education are almost universal right now, and indeed, one of the ambitions of Digital Humanities projects which are seeking to find validity for education that does not prepare a global information work-force. The realignment of the market with the education system, has been critiqued by theorists of neo-liberal globalisation, who have pointed out how it enables state disinvestment from education and the privatisation of learning resources. However, even in these existing critiques of Digital Humanities (whether they use that term or not), there seems to be a consensual agreement that infrastructure building is necessary and must happen. This talk, critically examines the implications of adopting Digital Humanities as a principle in emerging information societies, and drawing from experiments with students in 9 undergraduate colleges in India, examines the ways in which it needs to reconsider its relationship with the more accepted ideas of infrastructure, usage, adoption and learning. https://re-publica.de/en/sessions/say-digital-humanities-one-more-time-tech… -- David Golumbia dgolumbia(a)gmail.com

Dear Adeline, Thanks for the "Invisible Australians" example. I too did not quite get the drift of "Postcolonial Digital Humanities" at first. I, and possibly Craig too, seemed to think that the term implies that the way you use digital technology is somehow specifically "postcolonial" as compared with a digital resource for the type of history that defines itself as "postcolonial". I have produced digital resources in the domain of Buddhist Studies, if I called my work "Buddhist Digital Humanities" would that be helpful? Perhaps these problems are tied to the fact that the term DH will soon reach the end of its shelf life.
