Dear All,
Some of you may be interested in the following invitation to participate in DíaHD (Día de Humanidades Digitales) to be held on 10th of June 2013. Similarly to DayofDH the aim of the project is to document for one day what digital humanists do. This particular version focuses on digital humanists from the Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries or researchers from other parts of the world that work primarily in these languages. We hope to provide a forum that will help us identify digital humanists in these regions as well as providing them with the opportunity to share their work.
DíaHD is organized by:

Call for PhD Application in Cultural Approaches to Diagnostic Technologies
in East Asia Fellowship
Date: 2013-08-31
Date Submitted: 2013-06-04
Announcement ID: 204288
Research area: Science and Technology Studies / History of Health / Medical
Anthropology / Medical Sociology
Description:
Applications are invited for a three-year, full-time, funded PhD position
in Cultural Approaches to Diagnostic Technologies in East Asia in the
Centre for the Humanities and Medicine (CHM) at The University of Hong Kong.
This position has developed out of a collaborative research initiative
between CHM and the International Diagnostics Centre (IDC) at the London
School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on diagnostics for communicable
disease. Recent research has demonstrated the importance of dynamic
contextual processes and environmental factors in determining how
individuals, populations, and health systems respond to novel technologies
and disease control interventions. However, the role of socio-cultural
factors is often unacknowledged in technology development, implementation,
and assessments, with consequences for the uptake and efficacy of
healthcare delivery and disease control in the population. The
collaboration between CHM and IDC aims to promote cross-disciplinary
research into diagnostic technologies, foregrounding the significance of
socio-cultural contexts in the development, successful integration, and
sustainable implementation of diagnostic technologies for infectious
diseases in East Asia.
The PhD candidate should have a Masters degree (with merit or distinction)
or equivalent, preferably with a background in Science and Technology
Studies, History of Medicine and Health, Anthropology, or Sociology. The
PhD is for 36 months and the candidate is expected to register not later
than January 1, 2014.
Applications must be submitted via the standard on-line application process
for HKU. For further information on research postgraduate education at Hong
Kong University, application procedure and financial assistance, see
http://www.gradsch.hku.hk/**gradsch/web/apply/index_ps.htm<http://www.gradsch.hku.hk/gradsch/web/apply/index_ps.htm>
**. Full-time PhD students who hold a first degree with second-class honors
first division (or equivalent) or above are normally considered eligible to
receive a Postgraduate Studentship during the normative study period.
Candidates' results in Master's degrees may also be considered. The basic
level of studentship is currently HK$13,600 (US$1,740) per month (subject
to revision). Candidates may also apply for other financial awards. The
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship (HKPF) provides each awardee with a monthly
studentship of HK$20,000 and a conference and research related travel
allowance of HK$10,000 per year for a period up to three years.
The deadline for application is 31 August 2013. Applicants who have applied
for the HKPF will be automatically considered for the award of University
Postgraduate Fellowships (UPF) of HK$70,000 in addition to the Postgraduate
Studentships. Information on awards and financial assistance may be found

Hi all,
We just opened the registrations for our next THATCamp in the
Caribbean<http://caribbean2013.thatcamp.org/>.
This year we will be going to Cuba. The prestigious Casa de las Americas
has agreed to host us November 4-7. The first two days will be dedicated to
workshops, and the last two to the unconference. We hope this event will
draw an international crowd. We have an excellent local team making sure we
will have appropriate lodging and an international team now working on
funding for selected campers. For those of you worried about visas, let me
reassure you, it is perfectly doable to obtain the right permits to go to
Cuba if you act a couple of months in advance.
To register visit our registration
page<http://caribbean2013.thatcamp.org/register/>.
Registration is FREE. In fact the whole thing is free except for your
travel and lodging expenses.

Hi all,
It's time to put together the editorial board for the Around DH
project<http://www.globaloutlookdh.org/working-groups/491-2/>.
Ryan Cordell's class has done a great job of getting us started. We are
getting ready to move to next stage of development which involves refining
the design and translating the work into as many languages as we have
volunteers for.
Here's how you can help:
a) Nominate someone or volunteer to be part of the Editorial Board that
makes final decisions on the sites for inclusion. We need at least 1
representative from each of the areas defined in our
spreadsheet<http://www.globaloutlookdh.org/working-groups/491-2/>.
We already have somebody for Western Europe, Amelia Sanz, who volunteered a
long time ago.
Contact me directly if you want to be part of the jury/board.
b) Can your team help with translation of the whole site once it's done? We
would like for the actual project to travel around the world before we
launch to the general public. What better way than to have it duplicated in
different languages. It's written in Scalar (so far) so we will ask for
different teams to take over hosting for individual language versions. To
talk about the details contact me directly.
c) Can your team help with design? We just need one team for this. Again
contact me directly.
My email is colibri.alex(a)gmail.com

Dear friends,
I have published a blog post concerning the results of the survey "Who are
you, Digital Humanists?". In French.
I would like to submit this paper in at least a journal in english and
French, but in a spanish-speaking journal, I think it would be important,
too. http://blog.homo-numericus.net/article11138.html
For this reason, I am looking for people willing to translate it in other
languages!
Best regards,
Marin

The editors of The CEA Critic recently accepted our proposal for a special issue on Digital Humanities Pedagogy (Spring 2014). We imagined having this special issue move beyond digital humanities theory to practical application with articles addressing pedagogical approaches to introducing undergraduates to one or more aspects of digital humanities:
* transcribing, metadata writing, annotating, and basic TEI coding in conjunction with a startup or established digitization project
* datamining: creating narratives of digital texts based on searched terms or defining search terms for future researchers
* using digital editions to teach students paratextual influence
* analyzing and evaluating the vitality of and scholarly rigor within digital editions with ancillary editorial apparatuses versus open-source digital libraries (e.g. Project Gutenburg, Internet Archive, Google Books, Gale databases)
* using TEI tags to enhance research skills and develop annotation awareness as both creator and user
* writing hyperlinked annotations as a tool to increase scholarship and boost students’ researching skills
* collaborating across disciplines to engage the non-humanities major in digital humanities projects
Proposals for the 3,000-5,000-word articles should not exceed 500 words. Please submit proposals to digitalhumanities(a)ttu.edu<mailto:digitalhumanities@ttu.edu> by 15 June 2013.
All queries should also be sent to the aforementioned email address. Please consult The CEA Critic site for formatting guidelines: http://www.cea-web.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=15&Item…

"Revolutions exhibit man acting on a great scale: hence they produce great virtues, and at the same time great vices." -- Helen Maria Williams, 1793.
Dear list colleagues,
I've been promising to write up some more of my thoughts about the
relationship of DH to the world politics of language, and I've now managed
to put up a blog post about it:
"Postcolonial Studies, Digital Humanities, and the Politics of Language"
http://www.uncomputing.org/?p=241
It's about half of a longer essay version, which I figured I might submit
to DSCN once I finish polishing it up.
