Dear ALL, I support that we all read the post as suggested by Domenico. Thank you for the thoughtful and insightful post on the true 'global' state of our DH community(-ies). I was just a little bit surprised that Africa was completely ignored or neglected in the post. Thankfully GO::DH is striving to bridge that gap. It has opened its doors to support our initiatives in the Global South. For instance, Dan (i.e. Prof O'Donnell) was with us at the University of Lagos, Nigeria as keynote speaker and workshop facilitator during our *1st Lagos Summer School in Digital Humanities* ( July 10-15, 2017). Just an additional piece of information. Between November 14 and 18, 2017, I will be hosting the 1st International Conference in Digital Humanities at the University of Lagos, Nigeria supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Germany as part of its alumni network programmes. The current chair of EADH, Professor Eide has agreed to be the keynote speaker. We look forward to a great conference in Lagos. Should you consider attending, kindly contact me. Please visit www.dhunilag.com for additional information. Let me again return to the post by saying that it has raised a number of soul-searching thoughts. More importantly, it mentioned some of the challenges we face in the Global South and how we seek equal and fair treatment from other DH associations and groups. We hope we can move this conversation forward to achieve a more productive and mutually beneficial but truly global DH scholarship and communities. Thank you. With best wishes, Tunde

Dear Tunde,
first of all, thanks very much for your feedback. You're right, we did not mention Africa. The first reason (which is only a partial justification) is that Gimena and I know a good deal about Latin America, but very little about the African DH scenario. I'm really grateful that you're sending this information to the list -- I wish I knew about your conference earlier!
Secondly, our blog post originated as a contribution to a discussion going on within the Hispanic DH association which is holding its annual conference in Malaga next week. That explains also our narrower focus. That of course doesn't mean we are not interested: quite the opposite! In fact we're looking forward to receive submissions from Africa for the Global Debates volume ( http://dhdebates.gc.cuny.edu/cfps/cfp_2017_global_digital_humanities.html). And we'd be very grateful if you could circulate the CFP among as many African colleagues and institutions as possible.
We look forward to expand this South-South dialogue -- let's hope we'll have an opportunity in Mexico DH 2018! Perhaps we could organize a panel or round table that would focus on experiences from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Mediterranean (an 'old' North now rapidly becoming South). What really drives nuts the Global North is when Global South people start to dialogue to each other ;-)
Warm regards,
Domenico

Dear Northern friend,
I love your sense of humour. But the truth beyond jokes is that ADHO seemed to have failed to build an equal, diverse and inclusive Digital Humanities community.
Try harder!

One sees failure, one sees attempts with limited resources. Whatever view we have I hope none of us will leave it to ADHO to build communities. I hope all individuals and all the organisations we form, some inside ADHO and some outside, will continue taking part in that.
Maybe we should try less hard to give more room for new voices? Or maybe we should indeed try harder?
I am not sure but what I do know is this: I do not have any problem with Global South people talking to each other and I am happy such dialogues are not starting now, but have gone on for a long time.
Giitu,
Øyvind

Hi all,
This is an interesting discussion.
It's going to be hard to build a case for joining ADHO as a Constituent Organisation (CO) in abstract (i.e. without a specific proposal on the table) because the abstract reasons for doing it depend a lot on the details of the proposal. This is (and was) true of any potential CO. So, for example, the Canadian Society joined because it seemed like a good idea, after people had worked out what would be involved in joining.
There are very few abstract reasons for joining a group that would withstand a bad proposal.
You can make an abstract case against joining an organisation--or rather a positive case for maintaining independence or avoiding surrendering it--because that might well touch on some core values. I.e. you might think that a society or group is simply better doing things on its own.
So rather than say why I think we should join ADHO as a CO--something I don't actually think, since I don't know what the conditions would be--I'll work instead on coming up with some suggestions for why it is, in my opinion, worth exploring.
Finally, there is in all of these things an intangible aspect. I'm a Northern, Middle Aged, White, Male, and Tenured Full Professor who has been fortunate enough to be active in DH since its modern incarnation with the rise of the internet. So for me, organisations like ADHO don't really exist outside of "us": I've seen them arise and I'm relatively convinced that they are amenable to change.
Unfortunately, that is also the definition of privilege.
More anon.
